Review: STEPHEN SONDHEIM’S OLD FRIENDS at the Gielgud Theatre
By Stuart King Sunday, October 8 2023, 10:02
Surely one of the most hotly anticipated theatrical events of the year is STEPHEN SONDHEIM’S OLD FRIENDS whose run at the Gielgud Theatre follows a previously sold-out gala performance which celebrated the great man by revisiting much of the extraordinary output he created during his lifetime.

Review: NOISES OFF at The Haymarket Theatre Royal

Taking its title from the stage direction appearing in scripts to indicate sounds coming from off-stage, NOISES OFF is widely considered Michael Frayn’s masterpiece of farce which was conceived as long ago as 1970 as he watched Lynn Redgrave perform in a (not especially funny) play, which the author realised was far funnier when observed from backstage.

Review: IMPOSTER 22 at Jerwood Royal Court

Relaxed performances are generally considered for audience members who may struggle to cope with the more widely accepted constraints inherent in theatre etiquette, but this production demonstrates that audience members are not the only ones who may sometimes crave a more relaxed and random approach.

Review: TROMPE L’OEIL at The Other Palace
By Stuart King Monday, October 2 2023, 09:47
It has to be acknowledged that many underground theatre successes have started from humble beginnings and used as their basis a left-field, zany, bizarre and weird premise. The Rocky Horror Picture Show probably stands as the most long-lived testament to the genre, but there have been others. Here, Donald Trump’s pact with a devilish Vladimir Putin succeeds in getting him elected 45th US President in 2017 and forms the basis for some mad-cap but rarely enjoyable moments.

Review: FRANK AND PERCY at The Other Palace
By Stuart King Wednesday, September 27 2023, 21:03
When such a venerable pairing as Ian McKellen and Roger Allam appear together on a theatrical billing, it would be rude not to sit up and at the very least inquire what had piqued their joint interest in the script. FRANK AND PERCY is the sort of gentle talk-fest which puts this reviewer in mind of Alec Guinness and Edward Herrmann’s two-man stint in A Walk in the Woods some thirty-five years ago, and here the performers ooze a similar stage experience and collective, knowing charm.
