Mrs President in London

Art Pond Foundation is delighted to present Mrs President, an exciting new historical drama about Mary Ann Todd Lincoln. As the wife of legendary Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, this fresh new London production is both evocative and unmissable.

Mrs President the story

Mrs President brings the politically-charged life of the most misunderstood First Lady in America to sparkling life. Mary Lincoln is a woman at war with her own grief over her lost child, the political rivals who hate her, the envious elite and the people who accuse her of treason. As she tries to rebuild her public image the world’s first celebrity photographer, Matthew Brady, agrees to help. But their plans soon unravel in a tense battle to win creative control. As Mary digs in and becomes more determined than ever to tell her story, the play deftly handles themes of power, identity, female agency and the risks involved in letting someone else represent you.

About Mrs President

A wonderfully rich script by acclaimed artist, playwright, and historian John Ransom Phillips delivers a fascinating examination of the bias of history and everyone's need to define ourselves. We imagine Mary Lincoln would be delighted. The production will be directed by Bronagh Lagan who recently working on the productions of Flowers For Mrs Harris and Cruise

Would have been good if it was on

This show was recommended and we were really looking forward to it. All organised and then at the last minute - had notice that the show was cancelled due to illness. Seriously? Understudies?

Keep the attention, but bit confusing

I simply think that too many issues are addressed, to such an extent that nothing is clear at the end. That being said, Mrs President kept my attention and I keep on hoping for more….clarity!

Review: MRS PRESIDENT at Charing Cross Theatre

There are occasions in a reviewer’s life, when we are exposed to a nugget of political history which encapsulates sufficient intrigue that we yearn for it to receive the attentions of an accomplished playwright. Such writers can often weave the factual nuggets into an interesting and compelling yarn. The best are brim full of wit, wisdom and relatable characters with stories and opinions which inspire, unnerve, interest and elicit (from those of us with our bums on seats) oodles of empathy, envy, compassion and admiration. Unfortunately John Ransom Phillips’ homage to the feisty and oft maligned Mary Lincoln (wife of President Abraham Lincoln) achieves few of these.
