Mrs. Doubtfire the Musical in London
Mrs Doubtfire – The Musical
Were you brought up on a diet of Mrs Doubtfire? The magical 1993 American comedy-drama film directed by Chris Columbus delighted millions of people of every age, created for the movie screen by Randi Mayem Singer and Leslie Dixon. Now there's a stage musical version, and by all accounts it is absolutely brilliant!
You adored the 1993 film. Now it's in London, a brand new musical based on the fabulous novel Alias Madame Doubtfire by Anne Fine. Robin Williams played the starring movie role, a comedian whose antics are sadly missed. Sally Field, Pierce Brosnan, Harvey Fierstein and Robert Prosky completed the movie line-up. Now it's due on the West End stage for 2023, a huge treat for fans of the film and serious fun for anyone who doesn't already know the story.
What's the plot of Mrs Doubtfire?
Meet Mrs. Doubtfire, poppets. She is here to make everything better!
Daniel Hillard is a struggling, out-of-work actor. He's broke but he would do absolutely anything for his kids, moving mountains if needs be.
Daniel loses custody of his children after a messy divorce. He can't bear to be away from them so he disguises himself as the eccentric Scottish nanny called Euphegenia Doubtfire. But his desperate attempt to stay in their lives at all costs has unexpected consequences. When the persona he has created starts to take on a life of her own, she teaches Daniel a whole lot more than he expected about how to be a dad.
This story is as funny as it is touching, both hilarious and heartfelt. If you'd like to explore what it means to lose your loved ones, then find them again, this one is for you.
Mrs Doubtfire's Creative Team
The Mrs. Doubtfire book is by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell. The music and lyrics come from Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick, who make up the dazzling Tony nominated team behind Something Rotten!. Direction is by the four-Tony winning Jerry Zaks, who wowed us with his work on Hello, Dolly. The choreography comes from Lorin Latarro of Waitress fame and music supervision comes from Ethan Popp, who delighted audiences with his work on Tina: The Tina Turner Musical.
Buy Mrs Doubtfire the Musical Tickets Now
Anyone who loved the film will adore the musical. The costume designer Catherine Zuber and the hair and wig designer David Brian Brown bring the character to life on stage in the most brilliant way, and the adult themes of divorce and fatherhood are handled warmly with humour. Lovely, lovely, lovely. Book tickets as soon as you can!

Great show, plenty laughs and lots of talentI expected to enjoy this show of such an iconic movie but it really did surpass all my expectations. It was fun, funny, poignant, entertaining, beautiful songs and talented voices. Every single artist on that stage performed supremely well. I absolutely loved it and was enthralled throughout. The genres of music and dances were varied and thrilling (the restaurant performance in particular). Very dry sense of humour, subtle comedy at times and in your face LOL in others. Bravo!

An amazing show and my first solo showWell what an experience! I had a random night in London so decided as this show was close to my hotel to go along! Even though this was the first time I’ve ever seen a show on my own I had the best time! The humour was/is relevant and although some of the jokes have an adult theme they are done in a subliminal way so the adults get to have as much fun as the kids! Brilliant show!

Amazing, funny and witty !The show was truly amazing in every aspect. The only yet MAJOR deception is the first degree capitalization on homosexuality, which was totally unnecessary and added nothing to serve the plot, except to transform it into a “marketing material”. Which in my opinion, inappropriate for families with young children (as my 6 years old). The reference to inter-gender marriages, same gender parents, ect kept coming up for more than 6-7 times in case you missed it. Unfortunately, I would not recommend for children, despite the amazing acting, beautiful songs, the humor and all the wittiness.

Don’t waste your moneyI’ll have to rewatch the movie now to try to erase in my mind the show that I saw last night. The acting was wanting, the comic timing was bad. When you broke the 4th wall for a cheap laugh I knew there was no hope of watching professionals at work. The actors failure to create empathy or relationships made a catharsis improbable. It was a dull evening all the way around. campy at best!

Review: MRS DOUBTFIRE at Shaftesbury Theatre
by Stuart King | Tuesday, September 26 2023, 08:13
Due to other commitments, I was unavailable to attend the June press night for the stage musical version of Robin Williams’ smash hit film from 1993. Rectifying that situation last evening, I can report that the show not only lives up to the expectations of the movie, but adds an extra layer of musical energy and playfulness to the heartwarming and funny story of a dad who finds a new (if bizarre) way to stay connected with his children after divorce.
