Mr Foote's Other Leg in London
Don't miss the riotously funny and critically-acclaimed MR FOOTE’S OTHER LEG as it heads to the West End for a strictly limited season, straight from a sold-out run at Hampstead Theatre. An outrageous tale of comedy, tragedy and fame, this "rollicking" (Sunday Times) and "rumbustious" (Observer) production plays at the Theatre Royal Haymarket for 12 weeks only from 28th October.
In Georgian London no one is more famous than Samuel Foote. Satirist, impressionist and dangerous comedian, he has become a celebrity in a city and at a moment in time when the concept of selling personality was born. He even has the ear of the king.
Adored by many, despised by some, Foote finds himself at the sharp end of attacks from the press…and a surgeon’s knife. And in an age obsessed with fame, his colleagues from the worlds of science and the stage – from Benjamin Franklin to David Garrick – begin to wonder: does fame make you mad?
Directed by Richard Eyre, following his hugely acclaimed productions of Ghosts (Almeida/West End), The Pajama Game (Chichester/West End) and Guys and Dolls (National Theatre), and starring the BAFTA and Olivier Award-winning Simon Russell Beale "at his supreme best" (Guardian), Ian Kelly’s hilarious new play (based on his award-winning biography of Foote) explores our obsession with celebrities, and their rise and fall, through the true story of the ‘Oscar Wilde’ of the 18th century.

Learn some history as same time as laughterIt was somewhat hard to hear what they said at times, but I enjoyed the show, and the history lesson at the same time.

Different and BeguilingReally enjoyed this. I love Simon Russell Beale and he did not disappoint. The other actors were excellent but it was a little hard to hear two of them. It was really different to have the story of an 18th century impresario actually performed in his own theatre and to have the writer appearing as an actor in his own play. Lots of theatrical in jokes which might not appeal to everyone and it was possibly a tad too long, but SRB makes up for anything.

The script was very weak - confused and uncertain. It was billed as a comedy but I don't think that's a valid description. It was a drama with a few jokes - not very good ones! Overuse of swearing - indicates lazy writing. Definitely not recommended - a poor evening

BoringI found this show very poor. There was no story and appeared to rely on silly jokes for any appreciation. I would not recommend this to anyone.

One that could be missedSomewhat confusing because one really must know something about the origin of the story/plot. We got the impression that the cast were getting bored and were hurrying their lines. The audibility of the production was poor - and we had good seats in the circle. I don't think the people in the gallery or the back of the stalls would have heard much.
