Mojo in London

Mojo – Dark, extremely funny, fast-paced comedy

If you’ve seen the movie or were lucky enough to catch the award winning stage show the first time around, you’ll be well acquainted with the characters from Mojo in all their nasty gangster glory. This, the first major revival of the original stage hit, is designed to delight audiences, revisiting the tale of the ill-fated rock ‘n’ roll wannabe Silver Johnny, the Atlantic Club’s strange owner and manager Ezra, the determined gangster Sam Ross and the rest of the boys.

Mojo - The story

Black comedy at its finest, Mojo is set in London’s Soho, seedy by day and even seedier by night. Rock and roll is the next big thing and the gangster scene’s favourite night spot, the Atlantic Club, is where the plot unfolds.

When the sexual rivalries over a new and potentially great rock 'n' roll star first unfold, the tension between the Atlantic’s owner and a vicious local gangster causes trouble… and eventually leads to murder.

It’s the summer of 1958 and the talented would-be rock 'n' roll star Silver Johnny is well on the road to fame and fortune. But his manager Ezra, who owns the Atlantic Club, is jealous and possessive, determined to protect Johnny from the creepy, gay local gangster and entrepreneur, the awful Sam Ross. Ross is equally determined to get his own way whatever the cost, and doesn’t mind committing murder to get at Johnny.

Ross eventually saws the unfortunate Ezra in half, putting him out of harm’s way and winning a clear shot at Johnny. But when Ezra’s top and bottom half are discovered in two separate dustbins, the remaining gangsters are thrown into a panic.

Who will end up taking over the Atlantic Club? Will it be Ross, or Ezra’s ambitious sidekick Mickey? And what happens to Silver Johnny? Grab yourself a ticket and see for yourself!

Who is Mojo suitable for?

Adult themes and language mean this is one for the grown-ups, a comedy dark enough for the biggest fans of noir and a long-awaited comeback by a play that made a massive impact the first time around.

The energy on stage was amazing throughout and the humour was a very natural part of that. The characters were pitched perfectly, and although Daniel Mays stole the show for me, each actor had his moment to shine - not least Ben Whishaw and his incredible voice! The set was intriguing, during the first half I wanted to know what was happening downstairs, and in the second half vice versa. And Colin Morgan made my heart break right at the end. All in all...fantastic!

Famous actors in new roles

It was great to watch actors so familiar to me, but in totally different roles - and I forgot all about their previous (and famous) roles.

Stress and no story line

It seems to be a hit with the younger generation. I (54 years old) didn't enjoy it all and walked out during break but the acting was great and it did have funny moments.

If you want to think about how rock n roll started, and what happens when anything new of value is discovered, or just bathe in electric dialogue and acting.... this is a MUST.

When Harold met Quentin

Decent play. Interesting if not entirely original storyline. Some great performances. Poor sightlines. Terrible seats.

what was going on!!!

great acting and fabulous cast. really think this is the emperors new clothes. the story is not properly explained really isn't funny apart from the way it is delivered, but that is not script based. really didn't think it was much cop, which was a shame as we really enjoyed Jerusalem.

An insight into acting

It becomes very obvious after little time which of the actors has been to Acting School and is used to the theatre. Rupert Grint's disappointing performance by the outshining performance of his piers, in particular Ben Whishaw.
