Miss Saigon in London
Miss Saigon – The ultimate love story
Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg's Miss Saigon originally premiered at London’s Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, in 1989, and still holds the record as the venue’s longest running show. Now, on its 25th anniversary, a fresh version of the show that broke a multitude of box office records hits the West End stage again, this time at the Prince Edward Theatre.
Playing for a legendary ten years in the West End and almost achieving a decade on Broadway, the musical has delighted audiences in 28 countries and 300 cities, and has been performed in 15 different languages. It has attracted more than forty awards including two Oliviers, three Tonys and four Drama Desk Awards. More than 35 million of us have seen and loved it so far, and it has consistently impressed the critics. Times may change, but the appeal of Miss Saigon never dies.
Cameron Mackintosh himself allegedly finds it hard to believe its quarter of a century since the show’s premiere. He’d made the decision to reconceive and completely reimagine the show ten years ago but its heart and soul remain the same, retaining Bob Avian's remarkable musical staging and the same large cast.
Today’s version includes a fine new song called Maybe, written by Schönberg and Boublil for the character Ellen. The new song has already premiered in Holland and Japan, but this marks the first time it’s been performed in English.
Miss Saigon - The story
It’s 1975 and the Vietnam war is raging. The seventeen year old orphan, Kim, works in a seedy Saigon bar. John, an American GI, pays for his friend Chris to enjoy Kim’s ‘services’ for the night. But the Americans are about to leave Saigon for good, and their night together changes both their lives forever.
Three years later Chris is back home in the US, married to Ellen and certain Kim is dead. But she’s alive, in Bangkok, where she’s bringing up Chris’s son Tam. When Chris comes to Bangkok with his new wife, Kim’s long-held hopes for a loving reunion are dashed. But she is desperate for her son to enjoy a safe future in America with his dad, and she makes the ultimate sacrifice to make it so.

Outstanding show in every way!Miss Saigon was absolutely outstanding. Captivating from beginning to end. Powerful story sucks you in instantly and leaves you wanting more. The music is varied and upbeat - appealing to all. While applause is directed at the talented performers, let it be known that the lighting and special effects crew are just as deserving of applause as those taking centre stage. Thank you all for putting together such a powerful masterpiece!

take your tissues! We struggled a bit with the sound and understanding the words being sang. There were however some fantastic scenes, but with so much activity going on on the stage, you need to have a good seat with a good view of the whole stage to appreciate it all. However, all that said, it was a very moving story and I was glad I had tissues handy.

Incredible, powerful, beautifulAbsolutely incredible show, I loved it. It was brilliantly choreographed with so many amazing singers compared to most shows where you normally get one or two. The meaning and the story line were portrayed with such feeling and emotion, the set design incredible, some tears shed but some laughter too. Suitable for 16-18+ with the content. A must see! Almost as good as the original!I have watched Miss Saigon when it first came out in London (Leah Salonga). This time i took my mum (as her bday treat) along with my sister and brother. As i have seen the play before - it was a pretty good comparison. Todays production is in a smaller scale, cast are less and props are also less! However if you u are watching this show for the first time - IT IS WORTH IT! The existing Kim has a powerful voice that stands out in the group when they are singing (I like that very much!). The rest of the cast was also good. But the bar scene is not recommended for families with young children hence not recommended for family viewing!

Amazing - a must seeThis musical show from start to finish was amazing. The music (serious and comedy aspects) created a good balance throughout. You really felt at one with the characters. The way the set worked with all aspects of the story was fantastic and the sound effects vibrated throughout the whole theatre, making it feel like you were there experiencing it with the actors. Definitely take your Kleenex, there wasn't a dry eye in the house. I wouldn't recommend it for younger children as there are some adult themes that may not be suitable. I wasn't sure what to expect. It was a last minute booking and I am so glad I picked it. Sassy, exciting, authentic, pure brilliance.
