Merrily We Roll Along… backwards through time!

Originally a popular play by Kaufman and Hart, this re-working of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s unusual and moving musical follows the relationship between three friends, which turns out to be the very opposite of smooth.

Franklin, Charley and Mary’s friendship, marred by disappointment and the death of idealism, is charted over thirty years, kicking off in 1980 and working backwards to tell a powerful and extremely moving tale.

Adding an extra dimension to an intriguing story, Sondheim’s lovely songs support the action beautifully. Good Thing Going, Not a Day Goes By, Old Friends and more all tear at the heartstrings in this sharp, sad and disturbing performance. Lost love, professional disillusion, bad luck and tragedy dog the starring characters and the Director, Maria Friedman, brings out the very best in an already compelling tale with style and considerable vivacity.

Expect a stunning stage treat with design by Soutra Gilmour, Lighting Design by David Hersey, Sound Design by Gareth Owen, Musical Supervision and Direction by Catherine Jayes, Choreography by Tim Jackson and Orchestration by Jonathan Tunick. The overall effect is completely unforgettable, a visual feast as well as a genuine work-out for the emotions.

Take a musician, a dramatic lyricist and a writer. Dress them in marvellous dramatic period fashion, incorporating 1960s excesses, over-the-top 1970s outfits and typical early 1980s styling. Then create a narrative that takes you back in time through periods of hedonism, financial success, personal betrayal and professional disaster to their charmingly innocent, principled and idealistic youth. Told backwards, the story hits particularly hard and you’ll find yourself empathising, ending the performance completely, happily and delightedly heartbroken!
