Me And My Girl in London
It's Me and My Girl the musical, the famous show that whisks you back to the glittering 1930s, where the aristocratic Hareford family are seeking the legitimate heir to the title of Earl. Bill Snibson, a common-as-muck Lambeth cockney turns out to be the long lost Earl of Hareford, and chaos ensues as Bill does his best to learn the art of being posh. It's a brilliant show. But is it on its way to London's theatreland?
Back in 2011 Anna Mackmin’s fun new production of Me and My Girl, which had been thrilling large audiences at the Sheffield Crucible, was rumoured to be on its way to the West End, and the Shaftesbury Theatre was being tipped as the show's London venue. Jemima Rooper starred as Sally and Daniel Crossley as Bill, and the wonderful Miriam Margolyes played the Duchess. But it never transferred, despite being given five star reviews in the press.
Then there were rumours of a revival for 2015/16, allegedly to be produced by Fiery Angel. But that didn't happen either. Now a handful of famous names and being bandied about for a 2016/17 revival, potentially starring Damien Lewis. And that's all we know so far. Will it or won't it? Let's hope it's a resounding 'yes'!
Going back in time, the musical had a successful original run in the West End in 1937 before being transformed into a film in 1939, 'The Lambeth Walk', named after one of the show tunes. After returning briefly in 1952, there was a long gap.
Me and My Girl last played in the West End way back in 1985 at the Adelphi Theatre, clocking up a magnificent eight-year run and 3,303 performances. Robert Lindsay played Bill Snibson to perfection alongside Emma Thompson and Frank Thornton. The show won two Olivier Awards, one for Musical of the Year and the other for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Musical, given to Robert Lindsay. Then it transferred to Broadway for a solid three year run. So far, in total, the musical has won three of eleven Tony Award nominations.
Me and My Girl Musical – The story
Me and My Girl is a musical by Noel Gay, with an original book and lyrics by Douglas Furber and L. Arthur Rose. It's set in the 1930s and tells the story of the cockney gent Bill Snibson, who learns he's actually the fourteenth heir of the Earl of Hareford. Set in Hampshire, Mayfair and Lambeth, it's all about Bill's struggle to meet his aristocratic new family's expectations, a warm hearted, chaotically entertaining and funny tale that transcends time.
