Mandela in London
A new spirit has gripped our nation!
Together is where tomorrow’s promise lies
It's 1960. Young activist, Nelson Mandela, rallies the people of South Africa to protest against the racial segregation of apartheid. In 1962 he is arrested and sentenced to life in prison, where he will spend the next 27 years, taken from his wife and children, as the fight for freedom sweeps his country.
Infused with the rhythms of South Africa, this soaring new musical tells the extraordinary story of a man who changed the course of modern history - the sacrifices he made as a husband and father, and the global movement that inspired him and his comrades to keep fighting. The production is presented in proud partnership with Nandi Mandela, Luvuyo Madasa and the Mandela family.

Press Reviews
All-in-all, an untaxing evening of perfectly pleasant entertainment with a few bursts of joyous African rhythms and dancing. But somehow this reviewer still felt slightly cheated having expected an incredible production as befitted such an extraordinary individual.

The central performances are as strong as they can be given the material, and both Fiamanya and Luwoye’s voices brim with power, as do those of the chorus. But that is simply not enough and this feels like a thoroughly missed opportunity.

There are heartfelt moments, but should this be a musical? I’m not convinced.

Review: MANDELA at the Young Vic
by Stuart King | Monday, December 12 2022, 13:06
If ever there were a man worthy of an heroic musical treatment of his life, then surely Nelson Mandela would automatically qualify as a case for treatment. With music and lyrics by Greg Dean Borowsky, Shaun Borowsky and a book by Laiona Michelle, the Young Vic plays host to Mandela. Directed by Schele Williams, choreographed by Gregory Maqoma and proudly proclaiming the production's close associations with the Mandela family.
