Macbeth (National Youth Theatre Season) in London

Join tragic, paranoid Macbeth in his frantic grab for power

Macbeth – The story

Shakespeare’s darkest tragedy takes the stage against a dystopian Scotland that has been more or less destroyed by war. The murderous Macbeth undertakes a tormented struggle for power, his ambitions fuelled by a desperate need for control at all costs. From the dramatic opening battle to the final beheading of the hated traitor Cawdor and Duncan’s murder, the body count stacks up.

Macbeth is unstable from the start. He takes three witches’ prophecy to heart and, goaded by them, is convinced he’ll soon be Scotland’s king. But the witches also tell him that Banquo's descendants will rule the kingdom in the future.

Lady Macbeth convinces her husband to murder the king, which he does. The guilt and remorse he suffers result in spiralling paranoia and he kills even more people to cover his tracks and secure the future he desires so deeply.

The rebellious Macduff and his followers flee the country in the wake of Macbeth’s growing madness and unpredictability, teaming up with the king of England, invading Scotland and killing Macbeth.

It’s one thing reading Shakespeare. But the great man’s wonderfully rich dialogue is brought to life on stage, made vividly colourful and real. This production is destined to be a huge treat for anyone who loves the Bard and everyone who enjoys a genuine edge-of-the-seat theatrical experience.
