Jumpy in London

Starring:

Tamsin Greig

Jumpy – A show that hits a thousand nerves!

Middle class families with teens will watch this show unfold with fascinated, hilarity-filled horror as the self-recognition kicks in.

Jumpy is written by April De Angelis, whose acclaimed work includes Wild East, Catch, Calais, Country, Playhouse Creatures, A Laughing Matter and an extraordinary adaptation of the all-time classic Wuthering Heights. Expect a clever script that tickles your funny bone at every turn and you won’t be disappointed!

Jumpy – The story

The play’s themes question contemporary parental anxieties, taking an intimate and personal look at life after fifty. This is an exceptionally entertaining and perceptive comedy about modern living starring the extremely funny Tamsin Greig, playing an outstandingly witty part in this delightful play. And Bell Powley plays Tilley, the precocious teenaged girl who sleeps with her boyfriend and dresses like a hooker, to the dismay of her once-rebellious mother.

The play’s title refers to Tilley’s old toy monkey, which shares a bed with her and her boyfriend. But ‘jumpy’ also covers Grieg’s state of mind as she tries her best to accept the way her daughter behaves despite her frumpy feminist 1980s Greenham Common background. When Tilly falls pregnant, Hilary longs to let her daughter make her own decisions. But being ‘right on’ is easier said than done…

Who loves Jumpy?

It’s a compassionate, amusing and moving tale of teenaged and middle aged angst that’ll have you rocking in your seats with helpless laughter. Theatre fans aged 14 or over will adore this realistic comedy, and if you have teenaged daughters you’ll find yourself relating to the characters on a very personal level indeed – simply brilliant!

Not to be missed

So moving, so funny, so brilliantly acted, a bravura ensemble performance by every member of the cast (but Tamsin was dazzling, knock your socks off), such amazing staging and set design - it was just fabulous

Home Truths

Brings home, with sharp humour, the realities of middle class angst angst and problem teenagers. Like watching oneself in the mirror. Terrific acting, great production all round.

Jumpy a thumping great play

This was both tremendously uplifting, thoughtful and sad all at once. How well this play captures how you can feel as a middle class 50 year old mother with a teenage child living with such new boundaries to negotiate. The play is beautifully nuanced and says so much more, than you can get from an academic article about teenagers, the menopause or motherhood. My advice is to just enjoy it, take your mother or daughter even your son and let the play do its magic.

Disappointing

Some nice moments but too many unbelievable characters and caricatured (and undeveloped) relationships. Tamsin Greig did the best she could to hold the show together but, sadly, it was a bit of a mess

HILARIOUS COMEDY WITH THE ALWAYS BRILLIANT TASMIN GREIG

We attended the matinee performance of JUMPY on thursday august 30th - what a wonderful treat - extraordinarily high production values and great writing. The Duke of York is a beautiful theatre - a lovely intimate space. Congratulations to the cast and crew. We loved it.
