Julie the Musical in London
It all began with a meme. The 2022 Fringe Tour was a smash hit and it wowed audiences on tour in 2023. Now this deliciously raucous, intoxicating and colourful musical comedy with a big heart is in the capital for a strictly limited season.
Meet Julie D’Aubigny: beloved opera singer, respected swordswoman and flaming bisexual. JULIE: The Musical is an original production that weaves the tale of one of history’s most outrageous LGBTQ+ icons, with Music, Book and Lyrics by Abey Bradbury.
Loads of award nominations
The show has already been nominated for a string of awards. It’s a Best New Musical Offie Finalist 2024 and was also Best Costume Offie Nominated in 2024. It’s an OFFCOMM Award Winner 2022 named Theatrebab Best Touring Show and North West End Best Of 2022.
This is how it happened...
It all began with a meme about a fascinating French Opera Singer / Swordswoman / Nun Seducer. Abey Bradbury decided Julie would make a fantastic character for a musical. They/she spent a year exploring Julie’s life and times, and the show came to sparkling life.
The aim was to create a musical the woman herself would be delighted with. And that meant framing Julie as the main character in a show that’s just as chaotic as she was. The result is a masterpiece in different musical styles including stand-up, cabaret, live music, comedy, tap dancing, sword fights, twerking nuns, kazoos and more, together telling the extraordinary story of one of history’s most exciting LGBGTQ+ heroes/heroines.
This unique musical celebrates Julie’s life as well as the wider themes of queerness, found family, and making yourself a place in a world that isn’t designed for you.
About Julie D’Aubigny
Julie was one of the first public figures to live as an openly bisexual woman. She led an adventurous life seducing nuns, duelling several men at the same time, burning convents to the ground, being bribed by royalty and creating innovative opera – all before she turned thirty.
Born in around 1673, probably near Versailles, Julie’s dad was a skilled musketeer and swordsman employed by Count D’Armanac. Julie learned his skills as a youngster, became the count’s mistress at age 14, was married off shortly afterwards then ran away with her fencing master. By 17 she was sleeping with women. She stabbed Count D’Albert, joined the Paris Opera, and became a massive celebrity. She led an extraordinary life for a female in the 1600s, and this musical is just as wonderfully eccentric as the woman it celebrates.
Julie ultimately had her heart broken by the death Madame la Marquise de Florensac, the 'most beautiful woman in France', who died of a fever in 1705. She herself finally died in a convent in 1707 at just 33 years old.
The creative team of Julie The Musical
Written and directed by Abey Bradbury (they/she), with sound design by India Day (she/her), set and lighting by Rebecca Cox (she/her) and stage management by Sophie Coward (she/her), the show is produced by Conor Dye (he/him).
Abey Bradbury is a queer neurodivergent Theatre Maker, Writer, Actor-Musician and Director who has written and helped create music with Lamphouse Theatre (Wild Boy; Musical, The Musical Musical and Alan in Wonderland), Folly & Strings (Elysium), Motley-Minded Cobblers (The Elves & The Shoemaker), Cream-Faced Loons (Midsummer Night’s Dream, King John, The Complete Works Of Shakespeare* *But Just The Deaths (and the gory bits too!)
The production is supported by Arts Council England, there’s a Concept Album available, and the full cast album will blow your mind – as will this unstoppable treat of a show.
Featuring live music, comedy, tap dancing, sword fights, twerking nuns, kazoo choruses - JULIE: The Musical has "Irrepressible energy" (The Stage) you won't want to miss out on!
