Jerusalem in London
Starring:
Mark Rylance
London's theatreland has lit up with excitement thanks to an announcement by the producers of Jez Butterworth's extraordinary play, Jerusalem. Sonia Friedman Productions and the Royal Court Theatre have confirmed Ian Rickson's dazzling production of Jerusalem will be back in the capital for 2022, from 28th April onwards, for a strictly limited 16 week run. We'll let you know the full cast as soon as we're informed. In the meantime, get ready for a modern classic that has already become a legend.
Jez Butterworth's remarkable award-winning play premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in 2009, where it quickly sold out. It also sold out at the Apollo Theatre in 2010 and 2011, and sold every ticket for its 2011 run at Broadway's Music Box Theater, too.
The talented Mark Rylance returns as Johnny 'Rooster' Byron, joined by Mackenzie Crook who also reprises his celebrated role as Ginger. The designer is Ultz and the lighting design is by Mimi Jordan Sherin. The music is composed by Stephen Warbeck and the sound design comes from Ian Dickinson for Autograph. The casting director is Amy Ball CDG.
Roll back time to 1995 and Jez Butterworth's first play, Mojo, won seven major awards, including the Olivier for Best Comedy. He is also responsible for classics like The Night Heron, The Winterling, Parlour Song, The River and The Ferryman. Jerusalem itself has won Best Play at the Evening Standard Awards and six Tony nominations on Broadway, winning two including Best Actor for Mark Rylance. All this means you're looking at a piece of pure class, the best that British theatrical entertainment offers.
What's the plot of Jerusalem?
The scene is St George's Day. Johnny Byron is a wanted man. Will he take his son to the local fair? Will he be served with an eviction notice? Will he suffer Troy Whitworth's revenge or provide his dodgy mates with the massive amounts of drugs and alcohol they 're expecting? This is England at its most raucous and provocative, and you're going to love it this wonderfully comic contemporary vision of life in our 'green and pleasant land'.
Who is Jerusalem for?
Jerusalem is already a classic widely read in schools, where it's recommended for people aged 16 or more.
