Imperium I: Conspirator in London

Following their acclaimed sell-out season in Stratford-upon-Avon, the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Imperium plays, based on the bestselling Cicero Novels by Robert Harris, transfer to London’s Gielgud Theatre for a strictly limited season from 14 June.

Imperium is presented in two plays, which can be enjoyed as independent historical thrillers, or together as one unmissable theatrical event.

Told through the watchful eyes of Cicero’s loyal secretary, Imperium I: Conspirator chronicles how the great orator’s early success unwittingly paves the way for a brutal and bloody end to the Republic.

With Rome in chaos at the beginning of Imperium II: Dictator, Cicero must use all his brilliance to restore the power of the Senate from the civic mob and their would-be Emperor: one Julius Caesar.

Directed by RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran and adapted by Mike Poulton (Wolf Hall, Bring Up the Bodies), the Imperium plays feature Olivier and Tony Award-winner Richard McCabe (The Audience) as Cicero and Joseph Kloska (The Crown, RSC’s Written on the Heart) as Tiro.

5 stars - “Robert Harris’s Roman triumph is an exhilarating political drama” (Guardian)

4 stars - “Strikingly relevant. A must-see drama” (The Times)

4 stars - “Hail Cicero! A hugely impressive accomplishment” (Daily Mail)

4 stars - “The West Wing in blood-soaked togas” (Evening Standard)

Excellent brush up on your knowledge on Roman history-must see

The show is excellent although it is a bit long and it may well be shortened just a bit. You certainly need to do some reading in order to be able to follow it, but the program is absolutely spot on. Read it thoroughly before the show.

Bringing Roman power to our days

Cicero and his time is worth revisiting only, as in the play, it is brought to our own context. Great performances, great lighting and costume, great production.
