How The Other Half Loves in London
Following huge public and critical acclaim since it opened in March, Alan Ayckbourn’s hilarious tale of matrimonial mishaps, How the Other Half Loves, directed by Alan Strachan, is moving house to the Duke of York’s Theatre for just 12 weeks!
The star cast includes Olivier Award nominated stage and screen actor Nicholas le Prevost opposite Jenny Seagrove. Jenny starred in Ayckbourn’s Absurd Person Singular in the West End at the Garrick in 2007, and is best known for her role as ‘QC Jo Mills’ in ITV’s Judge John Deed. Jason Merrells - one of TV’s most popular actors from roles in Lark Rise to Candleford, Cutting It and Waterloo Road stars opposite Andrea Lowe best known for playing DS Annie Cabbot in the popular ITV series DCI Banks. Joining them will be Matthew Cottle, from the BAFTA nominated Game On, and most recently seen in Ayckbourn’s A Small Family Business at the National Theatre in 2014 stars opposite Gillian Wright. Gillian is nationally known for her award-winning role as ‘Jean Slater’ in EastEnders.
As Bob and Fiona clumsily try to cover up their affair, their spouses’ intervention only adds to the confusion. William and Mary Featherstone become hopelessly stuck in the middle, falsely accused of adultery and with no idea as to how they’ve become involved. The plot culminates in two disastrous dinner parties on successive nights, shown at the same time, after which the future of all three couples seems in jeopardy…
Fondly loved as one of his most popular plays, Ayckbourn’s tale of social graces and personal misunderstanding remains one of the celebrated writer’s most famous comedies.

Great last minute decision - whi are there any empty seats! This is a classic Ayckbourn, witty, clever, timeless insights into human behaviour with cutting comment wrapped neatly into comedy. The imaginative set of firstly two houses on stage at once, and then two dinner parties held on consecutive evenings in these two homes on stage at once, requires split second timing and dexterity from the cast. A total joy to watch. It is also an excellent retro experience of the late 60s/70s! (not really much music but review requires you fill this one in even if it was not a musical!

Dated and shouldn't have been let out of the 1960sThe reviews said 'excellent' but then they usually do. We left at the intermission (at that point the performance received muted applause from the audience) Some of the acting was terrible. You know who you are! Like Morecambe and Wise and other funny shows from that era, they seemed funny at the time but we've all moved on. We are consistently disappointed by pricing, quality and hype in the West End and won't be back. Try Edinburgh Fringe or Park Theatre, Finsbury Park for quality at a very fair price.

Funny from start to finishWe booked this with some intrepidation as there was only 1 review ( which was good) and it was in a theatre we hadn't heard of. I have to say we throughly enjoyed it. The story line was brilliantly acted throughout and we laughed all the way through. A must see!

Review: HOW THE OTHER HALF LOVES at the Duke of York's Theatre
by Andrew Bewley | Tuesday, July 19 2016, 11:57
It’s the 60s. Alan Ayckbourn’s comedy presents three couples: Frank and Teresa Foster (old, stuffy and, in Frank’s words, married “because it’s better than nothing”), Bob and Theresa Phillips (burdened with a child, and burdened by each other for most of the play, before passionately resolving their differences in the bedroom) and William and Mary Featherstone (you really pull for these two: Mary is scared of social situations, and William has spent all his life trying to make Mary less scared of social situations, but Mary is still really scared of social situations..and sherry).
