The Hills of California in London
The Hills of California is a brand new play by Jez Butterworth, directed by Sam Mendes. It’s on stage at the West End’s Harold Pinter Theatre from 27th January 2024 for a strictly limited season. Their last joint venture, The Ferryman, proved a multi-award-winning play. Now Jez Butterworth, the writer of Jerusalem, and his regular creative partner Sam Mendes, director of The Lehman Trilogy, are back with a new play. The Producers are Sonia Friedman Productions and Neal Street.
All about The Hills of California – Sensitive adult drama
The run-down guest house is called Sea View, but whatever window you look out of there are no sea views. This place is far from the seaside fun, a run-down place. The town is Blackpool, a traditional seaside resort in the north west of England. The year is 1976, the hottest and driest summer for two centuries, and you can’t see the sand for the crowds.
The Webb Sisters have come home to their mum’s failing guest house, where she’s upstairs dying. Welcome to The Hills of California, a sensitive adult play for people aged 16 and over.
The Hills of California cast and creative team
Leading the cast is Laura Donnelly, whose work on The Ferryman, The Nevers, and Outlander thrilled audiences. She’s joined by Leanne Best of Sweat, Ripper Street, and Line of Duty fame. Ophelia Lovibond played starring roles in Minx, W1A, and The Effect, and Helena Wilson appeared in Vogue World, Jack Absolute Flies Again, and Rosencrantz & Guildenstern. Together they play the Webb family.
The other cast members are Bryan Dick, Shaun Dooley, Corey Johnson, Richard Lumsden, Natasha Magigi, Nancy Allsop and Sophia Ally, plus Alfie Jackson, Lara McDonnell, Lucy Moran and Nicola Turner.
The creative team members are Rob Howell the Designer, Natasha Chivers the Lighting Designer, and Nick Powell the Composer, Sound Designer and Arranger. Ellen Kane is the Choreographer and Candida Caldicot the Musical Supervisor and Arranger, with Casting by Amy Ball CDG and Verity Naughton CDG as the Young Persons’ Casting Director. Zoé Ford Burnett is the Associate Director.

Great stage set, powerful actingExcellent set. Interesting storyline with flashback scenes. Ending felt slightly open ended after all the passion shown through out.

Very good new play…needs cuttingLaura Donnelly was excellent. Supporting cast good also. Too long. Taking out 30 mins would only improve it. Some nice twists. Good accents throughout. Theatre very, very hot. Seating much too tight for today’s audience members. Uncomfortable, and because people were getting fidgety because the show was so long…the old seats creaked and groaned for the last 30 mins. Distracting. Standard of acting and technicals very high. Good, detailed set. Not much scope for lighting - but hit every mark. Sound very good. Enjoyable evening. (Play not as good as The Ferryman, in my humble opinion.) It needs a discerning dramaturg.

Solid show; nostalgicWonderful themes around family dynamics, womens' experiences and holding on too tightly to our pasts. Funny and heart-wrenching, if somewhat underwhelming at the end. I wanted a little more intensity.
