Harry Clarke in London
Starring:
Billy Crudup
Make your way to the West End’s Ambassadors Theatre for a wickedly funny production transferring to London’s West End from March, coming to the capital direct from sell-out US runs in New York and Los Angeles.
This is Billy Crudup’s West End debut as well as the one man show’s UK premiere. Directed by Leigh Silverman, it’s on stage at the Ambassadors from 13th March to 11th May 2024.
Harry Clarke – ‘An acting masterclass’
The perfect choice when pure class floats your boat, you’ll love the Tony and Emmy Award-winning actor Billy Crudup in a production New York Theatre Guide calls an acting masterclass. Known for his work on The Morning Show, Coast of Utopia, No Man’s Land, and Almost Famous, Crudup scores another high point in David Cale’s quirky thriller.
Bad language, mentions of sexual acts, violence and drug use are the name of the game in this splendid performance. Crudup portrays nineteen characters in an hour and twenty minute tour-de-force that some say reminds them of The Talented Mr Ripley.
Crudup’s US performance earned him the Outer Critics Circle Award, Off-Broadway Alliance Award, Lucille Lortel Award, Drama Desk Award and an Obie. And by all accounts he’s looking forward to bringing it to London where there are, in his words, “some of the most discerning, intelligent and hungry audiences in the world.”
All about Harry Clarke – A wickedly funny thriller
The nine week London run means Crudup can continue having “the time of his life in a sly role terrifically suited to his gifts” (New York Times). If you’ve ever fancied seeing inside the mind of a fascinating confidence trickster, this one’s for you. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to lead a double life, you’ll love it even more.
The plot? A socially awkward Midwestern man, Philip Brugglestein, decides to adopt the persona of a charming, confident Londoner called Harry Clarke. The idea is to insinuate himself into a rich family once he gets to New York City. The conman’s story is thrilling, fascinating, and very funny indeed.
The Harry Clarke creative team
The creative team includes scenic design by Alexander Dodge and costume design by Kaye Voyce. The lighting is by Alan C Edwards, with sound from Bart Fasbender. David Cale wrote the original tunes. The vocal coach is Deborah Lapidus and the dialect coaching from Deborah Hecht and Jessica Berman.
Harry Clarke certainly has everything you need for a brilliant night in London's vibrant West End. With an interesting storyline and already achieving success elsewhere before its transfer - the addition of the Tony and Emmy Award-winning actor Billy Crudup is the icing on the cake for this thriller!

Review: HARRY CLARKE at Ambassadors Theatre
by Stuart King | Thursday, March 14 2024, 10:53
Following the death of his drunken father in a tractor accident, an awkward and un-sporty Midwesterner who has adopted an affected British accent since childhood, moves to New York City in search of a more cosmopolitan vibe. And now that he is here, why should he bore New Yorkers with his real back story when by developing the fully-rounded and louche persona of HARRY CLARKE to accompany his existing London brogue, he can embark on a fresh and exciting new chapter in his life.
