Hansel and Gretel is a German fairytale collected by the Brothers Grimm, first published in 1812 as part of their legendary book, Grimms' Fairy Tales. This beautiful story transforms the Globe Theatre with poetry, songs, love and hope, the ideal theatre treat for anyone who adores a children’s classic like no other.

Hansel and Gretel the story

There’s nothing to eat, and no money, and Hansel and Gretel’s poverty-stricken parents decide the only thing to do is abandon their two children in the great forest, where they might have a better chance of survival. Left to fend for themselves but desperate to find their way back home, Gretel sees a road made of pieces of bread and they follow it. But the witch who has laid the trail, and whose house is made from delicious sweets, wants to fatten the children up before eating them. Will Hans and Gretel escape her evil clutches?

About Hansel and Gretel

This production of Hansel and Gretel was recommended in the Evening Standard’s 2023 Best Children’s Shows to Book at Christmas. Now it’s back in town with a fresh new face, packed with happy chaos, music, and magic, perfect for the festive season. Ideal for everyone aged five or more, it’s directed by the brilliant Nick Bagnall who gave us Love’s Labour’s Lost, and The Two Gentlemen of Verona, also at the Globe.

Hansel and Gretel cast and creatives

Ned Costello plays Hansel. Harry Hepple plays Dad / Swanny and Jenni Maitland is the Narrator. Yasemin Özdemir plays Gretel and Beverly Rudd is Mum / Witch. Mason Clarke-Whale is in the Ensemble along with Lizzie Grace, Aaron McCallum Hepple, Jamie-Rose Monk, and Marc Zayat.

Designer Rae Smith, Movement Director Chi-San Howard and Voice Liz Flint join Writer Simon Armitage, with Musical Direction / Percussion by Magnus Mehta. The Saxophone and Clarinet are played by Tamar Osborn. The trumpet is played by Yelfris Valdés and the Tuba by Hanna Mbuya. The rest of the creative team comprises Associate Director Cory Hippolyte, Co-Composer / Orchestrator Magnus Mehta, Co-Composer / Songwriter Patrick Pearson, and Co-Designer William Fricker.
