Hangmen in London
Tickle that funny bone! This new play from the supremely talented Martin McDonagh caused hilarity from the offset. McDonagh returns in triumph after ten years with this brilliant black comedy set in the days after the nation abolished capital punishment in 1964, a story starring the country's second-best hangman.
The play is beautifully directed by Matthew Dunster. Reece Shearsmith, who appeared in the Royal Court production, has filming commitments so isn't appearing at Wyndham's, but David Morrissey and Johnny Flynn reprise their excellent roles. This production features design by Anna Fleischle, lighting by Joshua Carr and sound by Ian Dickinson for Autograph.
What a subject for a comedy. Capital punishment isn't particularly amusing but the private lives of the two executioners it examines provides a rich seam of hilarity. In fact it's painfully funny, an irresistible blend of circumstances that has audiences in stitches.
There's plenty of physical humour too, making the whole a remarkably powerful play end to end. Exploring human nature and examining the consequences of execution by hanging, the play focuses on the Murder (Abolition of Death Penalty) Act 1965 to vibrant, wonderfully witty result.
The experts say this one is tipped to run and run, and it looks like audiences feel the same. Critics join the positive fray with five star reviews from The Daily Telegraph, which calls it 'The most line-by-line funny show London has seen in years' and the The Sunday Times, which says it's 'Riveting from start to finish'.
The Independent newspaper calls Hangmen 'Drop dead hilarious' and Time Out says it's the 'funniest and most entertaining play in London right now' . Last but not least, The Observer proclaims that this unforgettable new comedy 'Gives new meaning to the swinging 60s'. If you see just one new play this season, make it this one.
Hangmen – The story
Harry is a minor celebrity, the nation's second-best hangman. But what happens to him when England abolishes hanging, and how does he feel about it? Harry, relaxing in his local Oldham pub, is surrounded by a mob of reporters and sycophantic regulars, all of whom are dying to know Harry's opinions. While, in a corner, out of the way, lurks a stranger whose motives for visiting Harry's local are entirely different...

Good but needed work. This was an interesting show but the timing didn't seem right at times. There were quite a few pauses and you wondered whether it was for effect or someone had forgotten a line! If it was for effect it didn't quite work. The language was awful and I didn't like that at all, it certainly put me off going to see the live cinema showing later this month.

Dark humourA very enjoyable play with dark humour & some cracking lines that really make you laugh out loud, the whole play has a real earthy reality to it including some industrial language which may not be suitable for younger theatre goers!

Overall, worth seeing. A good, dramatic plot which sometimes grinds to a sclerotic halt when things turn into a 1960's/70's version of Coronation Street mixed with Last of the Summer Wine (most of the action takes place in a Northern pub amongst a group of dull, old/middle aged men), complete with those era's cringe-making un - pc attitudes. A bit tedious at times (old men being boring in a pub) but there were some good laughs and great performances from, especially, David Morrissey and John Hodgkinson. The most compelling character is Mooney, played brilliantly by Johnny Flynn - it's a shame that the play does not concentrate more on his psychology and motivations as the scenes he is in are by far the most interesting and help to move things along.

weak story and uninspired actingThe story was very predictable, almost to the end. It started very slowly, including many side stories that did not help to enhance the whole, but instead gave the audience a feeling of boredom. On the other hand, the parts that had potential to be funny were skipped over too quickly. The timing from the actors was off, ruining the jokes being made. It was as if laughter was not encouraged, because it let to missing part of the show, there was no pause to enjoy a joke. At other times the silences were too long. Maybe meant to create suspension, but they felt awkward instead and like unnecessary waiting. Some of the supporting actors, like the inspector, were hard to understand, speaking in a rushed and inarticulate manner. To me it seemed as if they had rather not been on the stage. Overall the story should have been given another re-write and the actors should have rehearsed more to make it an enjoyable whole.
