Funny Girl in London
Starring:
Sheridan Smith, Natasha Barnes
Sheridan Smith is an award winner of an actress and has already taken the Menier Chocolate factory by storm with this fresh new version of Funny Girl. Now it's moving on to a new venue, having broken box office records at the Menier for the fastest-ever sell out.
It's wonderful to see Funny Girl back on stage after such a long absence. The last time it was on the West End stage was way back in 1966, which means this popular revival has been a very long time coming.
The multi award-winning Michael Mayer directs and the BATFA and Olivier Award-winner Sheridan Smith takes the leading role of Fanny Bryce, the woman who rose from the poor Lower East Side of New York to become one of Broadway's most popular stars thanks to the producer Florenz Ziegfield.
This is a semi-biographical story, and the funny side of the real-life Fanny hid a sad personal life. Cheered on stage and lauded as a brilliant comedian, behind the scenes her love life was a disaster. The relationship with the man she loved was doomed, and this funny and touching combination of happy-sad informs the entire show.
This brand new revival features music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Bob Merrill, with a book by Isobel Lennart. The score is stuffed with lovely tunes including the memorable People, You Are Woman, I Am Man, His Love Makes Me Beautiful, The Swan, My Man and Don't Rain on My Parade.
The show is presented in association with Sonia Friedman Productions and Scott Landis, featuring designs by Michael Pavelka, choreography by Lynne Page, lighting by Mark Henderson and sound by Richard Brooker. The music is supervised by Alan Williams.
Funny Girl – The story
The plot is loosely based on the life and career of Fanny Bryce and her stormy marriage to the dodgy entrepreneur and gambler Nicky Arnstein.
The show is set in New York City, and the plot is split before and after the First World War. The real-life star of the Ziegfeld Follies, Fanny Bryce, is waiting for her husband to be released from prison. She reflects on her troubled life with him, and tells their poignant story through a series of flashbacks.
Whether or not you've seen the movie, this is already a show-stopper of a new production and it looks like the next venue will also be a sell-out. We recommend you get tickets while you can, as soon as the venue is announced, to avoid disappointment.

What a fab showSeen it on 4th May, and the last night. Both great. Sheridan outstanding, Darius a fab leading man. The show was marvellous. All involved should be very proud of their work and that they made so many special days for so many people.

disappointed from KentThought your company treated myself and my family disgracefully as the tickets you sold me were apparently cancelled . Not only did you take my money, you left us stranded in London without seeing the show. When I phoned your customer services to get an explanation I was put through to a ill mannered man who obviously could not do his job and certainly offered me no solution to my problem, apart from e mailing on Monday to log a complaint. I had travelled to London with my wife and elderly parents to enjoy a theatre experience , which is one we certainly will never forget. I will be looking for compensation for tickets, travel and my wasted time. Needless to say I wont be using your company again.

Great story told performed in spectacular fashionA great 2 and a half hours spent watching this energetic and superbly acted show. The costumes, lighting, set and costumes cleverly told the story of Fanny Brice. The comic timing was fantastic and left the audience with a great sense of well being, although there were moments of sadness in the tale as well. The presence on stage of the main characters was great and how they do this twice on Wednesdays and Saturdays I have no idea. Great respect to the cast, orchestra and crew. One of the best I've seen and I've seen a few!! Thank you.

Good showThe sound quality was a bit off at times, but that is the only downer. Cast was strong and performed well to an appreciative audience. I felt the first act was slightly better than the second - possibly because it was more upbeat. Two great show stopper pieces - People who need People and ...Rain on my parade.. All 4 of us - 84, 2x early 50s and 23 year old student - enjoyed the show.

Sheridan Smith carried a weak showThe show was nice but nowhere near one of my top shows. Sheridan Smith was good although her accent was difficult to understand at times. To be honest she carried a show which had a weak story. The staging was minimal. An okay show but not one I'd see again. I guess I was a bit disappointed.

Excellent performance from a brilliant cast!We really enjoyed seeing Funny Girl yesterday. The whole cast were superb in particular Sheridan Smith who was captivating in this very demanding role. She was on stage virtually all the time and kept up the exacting standard throughout. We did wonder how Smith would compare with Barbara Streisand and were pleasantly surprised - her range would never match but nevertheless was impressive. Makes you laugh and cry .....

Brilliant SingingI did not realise Sheridan Smith had such a BRILLIANT singing voice. However, I wished I'd 'googled' Fanny Brice beforehand. I thought there would be a stronger story as it seemed to be a ordinary story of plain girl makes it big on Broadway. No story of her struggles to beat the odds. But the singing was brilliant, I just caught up with the hype?. Just a bit disappointed with the story.

So Disappointing! If you were bought up with Barbra Streisand's version of this story, you are in for a very disappointing evening. I sat through the show thinking the female lead (Fanny) is supposed to have an incredible voice whilst the male lead (Arnstein) has a minor singing role. Poor Darius, what a waste of his talent and Ms Smith was obviously struggling. To cap it all, they have changed the ending and missed of the best song (My Man). Sorry, but not for me. ‘Triumphant’ was the metaphor most used when ‘Funny Girl’ opened at the Chocolate Menier Factory last year, and that triumph has now seen it blast its way onto the Savoy stage with a glitzy, high profile production that is sure to grab even more headlines on an extended run until October. Was the hype justified? Not just of star Sheridan Smith, but the production itself?

FUNNY GIRL is a Broadway musical written in the early 1960s by the same composer as GYPSY, Julie Styne.
Like GYPSY it’s set backstage, in the bygone variety theatre of the early 1900s. It’s the story of how a young comedienne, Fanny Brice, used her gift for comedy and her unusual looks to become a massive star in the Follies, a popular entertainment of the day which predominantly featured identical, beautiful girls moving in simple unison around a spectacular set.

The news that Sheridan Smith is to star in the title role of classic musical FUNNY GIRL at the Menier Chocolate Factory (an Off-West End venue near London Bridge that’s proved something of a West End and Broadway hit factory) is significant.
Looking forward to Sheridan Smith in the title role of Funny Girl
