Finding Neverland in London
This exceptional production was nominated for two 2015 Drama Desk Awards, one for Outstanding Actor in a Musical and another for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical. Now Gary Barlow's Broadway musical Finding Neverland is set to transfer to London's West End in 2025, bringing a breath of fresh creative air to theatreland.
About Finding Neverland
Featuring a book by James Graham with music and Lyrics by Gary Barlow and Eliot Kennedy, the musical is based on the Academy Award-winning film of the same name. Described as a "breathtaking new musical" it follows playwright J.M. Barrie, the man who created Peter Pan and the magical world of Neverland.
It looks like the wonderful Alfie Boe will play the role of Barrie in the London production, having already experienced it for a while on Broadway. The musical premièred at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on Broadway in April 2015, and it's set to run until late summer 2016 before making its way to London's West End.
How about the music? Barlow's considerable song writing and lyrical talent is clearly audible in gorgeous tunes like The World is Upside Down, What You Mean to Me, Play, We're All Made of Stars, When Your Feet Don't Touch the Ground and more, plus the awesome signature tune Neverland itself.
Finding Neverland – The story
You love a good quality weepie. But you also adore a great backstage comedy, you're a fan of biographies, you enjoy romance and respond to magic. There's something in this new musical for everyone, partly why it is proving so very popular. Everyone who has a child inside of them falls for the story, a classic children's tale seen from a new angle and given a brand new face.
The plot goes like this. Celebrated playwright J.M. Barrie is an odd sort of man, both childless and childlike. When he befriends a quartet of spirited boys and at the same time falls in love with their lovely, lively mother, Sylvia Llewellyn Davies, he is inspired to create Peter Pan. Sylvia tragically dies shortly after the opening night of the resulting play, having first nominated Barrie as a guardian for her children.
