Fences in London
Starring:
Lenny Henry
Fences – Built to keep the world out or a family in?
Billed as ‘a cracking production’ with ‘shattering dramatic power’ by the Daily Telegraph newspaper, this is a play for theatregoers who are fascinated by American social history, love high drama and enjoy a seriously gritty tale of life unfulfilled.
Fences - The story
The main character Troy Maxson was once a great baseball player, in part because of a spell in jail for a murder he accidentally committed during a bungled burglary. But back in the days between the Korean and Vietnamese wars, the colour barrier was still firmly in place and there was no way he could make a career from his considerable sporting talent. It’s enough to make anyone bitter, and Troy is no exception.
These days he has a menial job collecting trash, although he has managed to overcome racism by becoming a driver, a role usually reserved for whites. His loyal wife Rose and teenaged son Cory, who still lives at home, bear the brunt of his bitterness. His son by a previous marriage, Lyons, has left home and works as a jazz musician but Troy has never seen him play. And Troy’s little brother Gabriel is an ex-soldier with combat-related brain damage, needing constant supervision. It’s a hard life but a good one. Nevertheless, Troy’s disillusion eventually starts to make an impact.
What about the fence itself?
What about the fence in the play’s title? It turns out to be allegorical, a structure he creates in an effort to repel fear, threat and death, secure the family home against an outside world he feels is cruel and dangerous and keep what remains of the family safe inside it.
This is powerful stuff, with Lenny Henry set to add to an already stellar reputation as a seriously talented actor. Playing one of the last century’s most poignant, wonderfully flawed and human characters, Henry delivers a very fine performance indeed. Not to be missed!

Fan of Lenny H.I was really surprised at the acting ability of Lenny Henry. The storyline was excellent and you can relate to the part that he plays. Have been telling everyone I met to go and see it. Brilliant stuff, and so funny. The other actors were great too!

A Lttle DisappointingThe play itself is to a degree at fault: it is at times over-written and exaggerated, especially in the second act. The male leads were very good, the wife less so, but again in part because she is required to say things that seemed forced and unlikely The actor who plays the younger son should be taught how to swing a baseball bat..

Happy Birthday LennyI liked this show because the acting without exception was first class. Lenny held the stage from start to finish. He is so talented and versatile. HE (as did the other actors) totally immersed himself in the role and I felt it had resonances in his own life. And how does he remember all those lines?

Unparalleled performance! For those unfamiliar with accents of 1950s black America, and certainly for those who know nothing of baseball, some of the terms may be alien but this does nothing to detract from the sheer excellence of the performance. This was a very different Lenny Henry to the affable comedian whose handling of the main character was nothing short of brilliant. Fine support from the other actors helped to make "Fences" a show to remember. One minor irritant; director please note that Cory - as a US Marine - should use an American salute, not the British open palm ... The error stood out to those of us who have served!

Fences. This was a thought-provoking and very moving production. Lenny Henry's performance was magnificent, but other acting was also superb, especially the portrayal of Troy's wife, younger son, Cory, and best friend Bono. The ending was unsettling to say the least; I'm still trying to understand the significance of the mentally retarded brother's outburst; perhaps summing up the confusion and despair of the other characters, or of the black experience in 1950's America? I'm very glad I saw this play!

OveractingAs a Lennie fan I was disappointed in that it felt he overacted being a USA blackman - seen many of his gestures in ALL his comedy satires - he is a talented entertainer and needs not to try too hard to please
