Dr. Strangelove in London
Starring:
Steve Coogan
Are you ready to embark on a darkly comedic and intellectually stimulating journey through the absurdities of nuclear war and political paranoia? Stanley Kubrick's iconic masterpiece, Dr. Strangelove, is making its West End debut in Autumn 2024.
This exciting new stage adaptation of what is hailed as one of the greatest comedic films of all time is the result of a collaboration between the BAFTA and Emmy Award-winning Armando Iannucci and Olivier Award-winning Sean Foley. Get ready to experience this timeless satire brought to life in a whole new dimension!
What is Dr Strangelove about?
The original 1964 classic film of Dr Strangelove was a huge hit; being nominated for four Academy Awards and seven BAFTAs at the same time.
Set during the Cold War era, the story itself revolves around a paranoid Air Force general who orders a nuclear attack on the Soviet Union, triggering a series of absurd events that lead to the brink of nuclear apocalypse. The plot is loosely based on the 1958 thriller Red Alert by Peter George, who co-wrote the screenplay along with Kubrick and Terry Southern.
Explosively funny, this show reveals what happens when a handful of men seem hell-bent on mutually assured destruction.

Each character was pitched at the same bizarre level of exaggeration, and therefore the story lacked depth. No sense of menace or in the genuine catastrophe of the world potentially ending, which for me is why the comedy didn’t work. It was all one note. There are clearly some very clever people involved and some funny lines, but it was for me, a big missed opportunity. Also, other than the ego trip of comparing himself to Peter Sellars, I didn’t see the point in Steve Coogan playing four characters. The most impressive thing about it were the quick costume/wig changes. Sorry for all the negativity but that’s how I felt.

Too much like the movieToo much like the movie. Nothing new. Nothing original. Nothing unexpected. Nothing was done to make the story unique for the stage. This show represents everything that’s wrong with the theatre today. Give the audience life, not copies. Give us magic, not imitations. Make us love the live theatre, not dead reflections of someone else’s creativity. Sorry for the bad review. But someone has got tell you stop it before it’s too late.

Hilarious show completely relevant for our timesA timely piece of theatre. It was a hoot but also frightening in this current era, where out of control madmen appear to be in charge (or may soon be so) of so many countries. Lots of whizz-bang effects and “smoke”. Steve Coogan was great in all the parts he played.

Review: DR STRANGELOVE at Noël Coward Theatre
by Stuart King | Wednesday, October 30 2024, 08:51
Film director Stanley Kubrick’s savage and irreverent 1964 black comedy Dr Strangelove Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb, tapped into the creeping paranoia of the Cold War and has become a timeless movie parody. Now for the first time, theatregoers have an opportunity to enjoy the spectacle of a crazed US Airforce General ordering a pre-emptive strike on the Russians in this West End production of the movie which has been co-adapted by Armando Iannucci and Sean Foley, (with the latter also serving as director) starring multiple BAFTA winner Steve Coogan.
