Doctor Faustus in London
Starring:
Kit Harington
The Duke of York's theatre delivers the perfect venue for Jamie Lloyd's version of Doctor Faustus, on stage from early April to early June 2016. Kit Harington, the hugely popular Game of Thrones star, is in the leading role as Faustus himself, which means you’re in for a real treat. Thanks to his considerable talents and Jamie Lloyd's famously innovative and anarchic reinvention of classic works, Marlowe's play has been given a potent new lease of life for the 21st century.
Doctor Faustus – The story
This salutary tale examines what happens when you sell your soul to the devil. The greedy Faustus makes a pact with him, swapping his soul for the ability to carry out the most incredible conjuring tricks. Black magic is the name of the game and while the pact seems like a good idea at the time, catapulting Faust into a thrilling world of celebrity and wealth, there's a dark side. A very dark side.
Faust's worldwide reputation is sealed, he's surrounded by beautiful women and rich friends, sycophants and adoring fans. An international heartthrob dripping in money, he wields enormous personal power. But the devil is hot on his heels, set to catch up.
Marlowe never saw his masterwork published. He shuffled off this mortal coil a good decade before it was printed. He had no idea how popular it was to become, and how long its appeal would last. The story still wins friends and influences people, and this new production has been updated with horribly funny dark scenes added by Colin Teevan, plus a series of remarkable on-stage illusions.
You'll recognise today's celebrity-obsessed society, proving that while the centuries pass, some things don't change that much. Greed and instant gratification are still top of the menu. Celebs still rule the media waves, and the play still has a powerful message to deliver.
Kit Harington has played Jon Snow in HBO's award-winning hit series Games of Thrones since 2011, and has some splendid performances under his belt. He played Albert Narracott in the original version of War Horse at the National's Olivier Theatre in 2008 and is also hot movie property. Director Jamie Lloyd has a long and glittering list of successes under his belt including The Ruling Class, Richard III, The Pride, The Hothouse, and The Commitments.

DisappointingI never expected a barrel of laughs but this production of Dr Faustus was beyond what I could have imagined. It was inappropriate through out in an attempt to be profound, extremely graphic, I did not find it challenging but rather traumatic.

A third-rate productionDoctor Faustus is a classic tale of an educated man choosing to sell his soul, after much agonising about the morality of this act. This updated version is Monty Python goes to hell.

Departure from original play made a very disjointed production. Quite hard to hear Kit Harrington and was not supported well be the cast. Lighting was not imaginative enough and the set was boring. Magical moments were few and I would have hoped they would have been much more impressive . There was too much gore and dribbling - less is more!

a strange experienceThis play started well enough but after 20 minutes any pretence to act out Marlowe's language & plot & characterisation was abandoned till a token couple of lines at the end. In-between we had creevan's pastiche of the play with Faustus as rockstar & then stage magician(a la Paul Daniels God rest his soul), nude mates of his, fortunately one female so a bit of eye candy, Lucifer in imposing underpants & Mephistopholes masturbating the good doctor to rock music plus on-stage rape of Helen of Troy at knifepoint & finally ingestion of human excrement masquerading as chocolate just to cap an overall ugly charade that did none of the actors any favours. I guess the cheering stagegoers at the end were fans of Kit Harington from Game of Thrones minimal audience cult tv series featuring killing & rape en-masse in a fake fourteenth century setting. But there you are, Christopher Marlowe eat your heart out!!!

Game of Thrones Star, Kit Harington is the West End's Doctor

Like so many people I’m a massive fan of the fantasy TV saga GAME OF THRONES so when it was announced that one of the show’s biggest stars, Kit Harington, who plays the central character Jon Snow, was to appear in the title role of DR FAUSTUS I knew there’d be a stampede at the box office.
