A secret marriage takes place, and it changes the fortunes of two very different kingdoms. For the first time in a decade, audiences can experience the magic of Shakespeare's Cymbeline, on stage at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse and played in candlelight.

Cymbeline the story

Cymbeline is the queen of ancient Britain. When her daughter Innogen secretly marries against her mother’s will, Posthumus is banished to Rome. Living in exile, he bets on Innogen’s innocence but it's a gamble too far. As Rome prepares for war, will Innogen be able to negotiate peace between the two very different worlds?

About Cymbeline

Director Jennifer Tang (Further Than The Furthest Thing) makes her Globe directing debut in a brilliant play that explores nature, nurture and female leadership in a man’s world. The play itself is inspired by legends about the ancient Celtic British King Cunobeline. It's listed as a tragedy in the Bard's First Folio, these days it's often classified as a romance, sometimes a comedy. However you experience it, this is a huge Shakespearian treat.

Aaron Anthony plays Guiderius / Lord and Madeline Appiah plays Woman / Cornelia / Belaria, alongside Nigel Barrett as Lucius / Philario, Amanda Bright as Pisania and Gabrielle Brooks as Innogen. Silas Carson plays the roles of Duke / Frenchman, Angelina Chudi is Ensemble / Cover, Nadi Kemp-Sayfi plays Posthumus Leonata and Martina Laird is Cymbeline herself. Jordan Mifsúd plays Cloten, Pierro Niel-Mee is Iachimo and Saroja-Lily Ratnavel is Lady Helen / Arviraga.

The Assistant Director is Charlotte Vickers, joined by Candlelight Designer Azusa Ono, Casting Director Becky Paris CDG, Composer Laura Moody, Costume Supervisor Megan Rarity and Costume and Set Designer Basia Bińkowska. The Fight & Intimacy comes from Rachel Bown-Williams and Ruth Cooper-Brown of Rc-Annie and the Movement Director is Chi-San Howard. The Text Consultant is Simon Trinder, the Voice Coach is Charlie Hughes-D'Aeth, the Wellbeing Practitioner is Carol Cumberbatch and the Musical Director / Vocals / Cello player is Laura Moody.
