The Crown Jewels in London
Al Murray, Mel Giedroyc, Carrie Hope Fletcher, Neil Morrissey and Joe Thomas. That's what we call an all-star British comedy cast. They all star in The Crown Jewels at the Garrick Theatre. The play has been written by the brilliant Simon Nye, the BAFTA-nominated creator of The Durrells and the all-time TV comedy classic Men Behaving Badly. It's directed by Sean Foley, the multi-Olivier Award winner behind the Shakespeare comedy Upstart Crow, and The Ladykillers. It'd be a crime to miss it, so grab your The Crown Jewels theatre tickets now.
The West End premiere takes place first, followed by a tour incorporating venues in England and Wales.
The creative team includes the Set and Costume Designer Michael Taylor, the Lighting Designer Natasha Chivers and Sound Designer Andy Graham. It's produced by Simon Friend in association with Adam Kenwright, Trafalgar Theatre Productions, Jenny King, Gavin Kalin, David Adkin and JAS Productions.
What's the plot of The Crown Jewels?
This is a laugh-a-minute new comedy inspired by an incredible moment in British history. You'll meet the charismatic yet unpredictable Colonel Blood, who is determined to bring off the biggest heist... ever. He's going to steal the Crown Jewels, he's going to do it in plain sight, and he has gathered a gang of complete misfits to help him achieve his goal. What could possibly go wrong? At the same time, King Charles the Second is keen to avoid a royal scandal, and he's furious at the thought of people actually handling his precious treasure.
Unbelievably, the plot is inspired by a true story, and it really was the nation's most audacious heist attempt. No wonder the cast is so strong - and so funny. Al Murray, loved for his role as The Pub Landlord, plays the king. He's joined by Mel Giedroyc of Great British Bake Off fame, and Carrie Hope Fletcher who delighted us in Bad Cinderella, Les Misérables, and Heathers in the West End. Aidan McArdle is known and loved for Leopoldstadt in the West End and Ridley on ITV. Neil Morrissey starred in Men Behaving Badly and Line of Duty. Joe Thomas is one of Channel 4's The Inbetweeners, and made us howl with laughter in Fresh Meat. Last but not least there's Tanvi Virmani from the West End run of Life Of Pi.
Who is The Crown Jewels for?
This show is perfect for people aged 12 and more.

Boring I left at the intervalI came with great expectation having seen interviews.. the historical story and great comedic actors .. however my party found it boring ..the ad lib audience interaction was picking out people on the audience and asking their name where they lived and what they did .. not funny and boring The acting was lame mumbled and generally poor timing ( I appreciate it was a farce and tongue in cheek !) No one was laughing I am surprised Whst a shame We left in the interval msybe the second act was amazing!

DisappointingWhilst I was expecting comedy I was expecting a more refined show. The lines by Captain Blood were muffled and too fast in the first act and the plot was lost because of it. There was some excellent acting and fine touches but overall was more Pantomime than I was expecting. Mel was excellent.

No Al Murray at the matinee which was a shame. Cover actor did a cracking job but would have liked to see Al. Otherwise excellent but not for younger children as lots of innuendo etc.

An interesting take on a historic timeI agree not suitable for under twelves both because some of the language is 'funny' sexually explicit and many of the sexual innuendos would go over their heads (mind you I'm late 70's so what do I know). I enjoyed it.

Comedy theatre at its best! The whole cast are fabulous. The interaction with the ‘court’ is very funny. I had to come back to watch it again! Our seats were great value for money. Would highly recommend this show and theatre as it is not as big as others so no endless flights of stairs to climb! 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A funny farceLots of laughing, and fun to see, but not much substance to the plot. So a serious theatre goer would not be impressed, but the average person would enjoy a good laugh. More lewd than expected, so don't take children too young, and not for the prudish.

Barnstorming restorationThe Crown Jewels possessed all the right ingredients for a fun afternoon even before curtain up: stellar cast, great writing and a spin on a royal story. What’s not to like. Al Murray was as good as I:’ve ever seen him even if on occasion he slipped slightly into the Pub Landlord. Mel Giedroyc was superb in her dual role and Carrie Hope Fletcher’s songstress, a songbird to behold. I would recommend this show to anyone who has a royal interest in royal history even if the truth is slightly distorted by Simon Nye’s script.

Sadly not as funny as expectedIt’s such a shame this show was disappointing. The plot was too small to be made into a play. The acting was very amateur and given the cast this was surprising. I am not sure if it was the script or the overacting. Would not recommend seeing this show, sadly.

Funny with lots of cheeseVery funny. Good old tongue in cheek British humour. Crowd participation was funny. Mel plays fabulous characters with those sassy glances. Al, stole the show of course, great performance for someone who isn't known for his acting. If this play doesn't run for much longer than scheduled,I will be very surprised

Slapstick at its very best!If you want a laugh then look no further. Brilliant witty comedy executed with flair by each and every professional on the stage. Leave your political correctness at home and enjoy the fun and frolics. Al Murray was simply superb and extremely funny with an amazing memory for his huge monologues. However we went to see the fabulous Mel Giedroyc who did not disappoint. It’s rare to be able to see so many well know. Actors in one show- don’t miss out!

Review: THE CROWN JEWELS at Garrick Theatre
by Stuart King | Tuesday, August 1 2023, 08:19
Ten years after the Stuart dynasty has been returned to the throne and with Ireland reduced to little more than a serf state, Colonel Blood (Aiden McArdle) attempts a daring heist to strike a blow against the English oppressor. Billed as a Restoration romp, a bewigged Al Murray assumes the crown as Charles II but with largely underwhelmingly results.
