Close To You - Bacharach Reimagined in London
Bacharach Reimagined – A passionate reappraisal. The Guardian calls it, “a clever, passionate reappraisal of Burt Bacharach”. In their words this is 'much more than just another jukebox musical'. It's a passionate reappraisal of the great man's work, given a lick of contemporary paint without losing so much as a crumb of its legendary people-appeal. Head for the Criterion theatre to experience the very best of Burt Bacharach... with a difference.
The Guardian's reviewer waxes suitably lyrical, explaining how the tunes have been placed in an order that cleverly highlights the lovely, spine-tingling yearning and melancholy that Bacharach's work is so famous for. At one point there's a particularly passionate rendition of Don’t Make Me Over, the next a version of Walk on By that'll have you pinned to your seat, full of happy-sadness.
The show is staged by the brilliant Steven Hoggett in a particularly intimate way. In his capable hands the tunes seem spontaneous, emerging from a group of seven young and talented musicians as they hang around in a New York-style, sofa-stuffed loft. The whole thing is redolent of good times and you'll leave feeling great, as though you've spent an amazing night out with a bunch of old friends.
You'll be interested to know that Kyle Riabko, who wrote the new arrangements, developed the show after realising that he and Bacharach actually got on remarkably well. The pair met in a studio, they hit it off and now history is being made... all over again.

Fab -see it you mustThis is the 2nd time I've seen it fist at the chocolate factory and now at the criterion. I loved the factory beco sit is small and intimate so the show has a slightly different dynamic in the thestre. Nevertheless it lost none of its energy and enthusiasm from the cast I would have bought a cd if it had been available. Brilliant show truly enjoyable

ok production artists BRILLIANT - so talentedOverall good and some arrangements of well known songs excellent - others lost the simplicity of the original composition in my opinion but overall it was a polished performance well worth seeing.

Bart at his bestThis was a wonderful interpretation of Burton Bacharach's music. Brilliantly performed by the whole cast. My only complaint is why did it stop so soon? Another couple of hours would have been great.

Must see!I imagined a cabaret type show with a grand piano and a man in a penguin suit! However from the moment we entered the theatre the whole atmosphere and ambience put us in the mood! What fantastic talent from 7highly talented musicians, so young, vibrant and energetic yet sensitive and poignant in all the music. It was so cleverly arranged yet took nothing away from the original brilliant compositions. I loved every nuance, great discipline and perfect timing of all the artists. Hope this show stays a long time in London and then goes out for the rest of the uk to enjoy

Colourful, must see.The show was great. The musicians were talented and entertaining. Kyle was particularly good. Some of the vocals went on a bit but the whole evening was lovely. The set was creative and the idea of having the audience on the stage was innovative.

DisappointingSo looking forward to this but such a disappointment. The lead singer's voice was not to my taste. Most of the songs are suited to a female voice.

Wow, quite a showA very talented group of musicians turn very well known music into a rock extravaganza. Cleverly choreographed with extraordinary stage settings. I loved the whole production taking me into an area of music I would not normally venture into. Just brilliant.

Those actors are not Hollywood beauties, but their vocal and musical talent were captivating. My son and I liked the show - the performances, the stage setup and the singing. 2 scenes out shine very brilliantly - the couple hugging while dancing and singing, playing the guitar and that black singer vocal chords were mesmerizing.

Really ReimaginedFirst of all I am a big Burt Bacharach fan, which was the main reason I came to see the show. It had no story rather it was just a series of his hit tunes over the last 50 years but rearranged to fit a younger more modern audience. A few renditions stood out, most the acoustic versions like Close to You, but the majority just did not work for me. Maybe I was just expecting something like Jersey Boys or Carole King's Beautiful, which both proved that their music are timeless. It would have appealed to me, and maybe to a few more like me if the originals arrangements were performed. Unfortunately, I feel that Close to You may close up soon.

Review: CLOSE TO YOU: BACHARACH REIMAGINED at the Criterion Theatre
by Davor Golub | Friday, October 9 2015, 09:58
For some people the name Burt Bacharach conjures up a vision of soppy 1970’s elevator muzak. However for those musicians in the know, Bacharach has always been considered a legendary composer who transformed pop music with his innovative jazz rhythms and harmonies. It is therefore an absolute pleasure to see his music so thrillingly and modernly re-imagined in ‘Close to You: Bacharach Reimagined’ at the Criterion Theatre. The show was initially staged in New York and was followed by a successful run earlier this summer at the red hot Menier Chocolate Factory.
