Chimerica in London
Chimerica – Clever, challenging, exciting
The term Chimerica was originally coined by the eminent historian Niall Ferguson to describe the strange relationship between America and China, who couldn’t be more different in their outlook; America, the trigger happy and indulgent consumer society and China, the money and land-grabbing control freak. As you can imagine it’s a fascinating tale based on an equally fascinating and dysfunctional relationship. And the press has unanimously dubbed it a ‘must see’.
Chimerica - The story
Expect a thoughtful, complicated picture of the New York photojournalist Joe Schofield’s search for the mysterious and heroic subject of a photo he took in 1989 as the tanks rolled through Tiananmen Square, an image that became his most iconic. The photo, of a lone Chinese protestor standing in front of the tanks in early June 1989, is powerful enough in itself. But the story it reveals turns out to be even more so.
On one level Chimerica is an essay in changing human relationships destroyed by greed, cruelty and selfishness. On another it achieves touching moments of human-to-human connection which stand above the horrific backdrop against which they unfold. It’s a beautiful, accomplished piece of work and a genuine pleasure to watch.
“Play of the year”
In Time Out’s opinion, “this is the play of the year so far”. And it takes the seriously talented and already well-respected Lucy Kirkwood to a whole new level, into the territory of the major writer. The director Lyndsey Turner and designer Es Devlin do a brilliant job of creating scenes via an extraordinary spinning cube which opens to reveal Zhang Lin’s seedy Beijing flat, the office of the star of the show Joe’s newspaper editor and other scenes. The end result is compelling, entertaining, touching, unforgettable.

A wonderful sixtieth birthday present!Just loved the show particularly the imaginative stage and set design. It moved at a fast pace and still the timelines and different decades and the multi layering clear. Two days on and I'm still thinking about it!

Thought provokingThis was a very thought provoking show. I'ts main strength was helping me to understand the the portrayal of the Chinese people and their relationship with 'the Party'.

Exaggeration is art's first sinThe play tries to deal with too many topics and relations. Some of them are marginal to the point. The result is that the play is much too long (ca 3h inc. break ). A 45 min cut would improve it tremendously.

Absolutely fabulous!!Chimerica was amazing - truly one of the best plays I've seen in the last year. Set was fantastic and even though it was a very serious subject there were some lovely bits of humour.
