Chariots of Fire in London
Starring:
Jack Lowden, James McArdle
Enjoy this thrilling stage adaptation of Chariots of Fire
The original 1981 film was a massive worldwide hit, winning four Academy Awards including Best Picture. It still holds nineteenth place in the British Film Institute's list of Top 100 British films, and it’s a story that just keeps on giving.
This superb new production takes to the West End stage, including the film’s epic musical score and the song Jerusalem, a tune guaranteed to bring patriotic tears to your eyes! The athletes’ courage brought them glory at the 1924 games and their story continues to inspire people of every age, sports lovers or not, with its raw human beauty, sensitivity and realism. A masterpiece in the making.
Chariots of Fire – The story
It’s a fact-based story set more than eighty years ago, in 1924, the tale of Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams, two athletes running in the 1924 Olympics. And it’s still one of Britain’s most outstanding sporting achievements, unforgettable and unforgotten.
Harold Abrahams is an English Jew, who runs against prejudice. Scot Eric Liddell, a devout Christian, runs for the glory of God. But they both have to battle against social and political pressures to gain acceptance and win the chance to run at the Games in a true-to-life tale of hope and honour prevailing against considerable odds.
You’ll love it even if you don’t love sport!
Playwright Mike Bartlett has created the stage show and it’s directed by Edward Hall, with production design by Miriam Buether and music by Vangelis and the Tony award winning composer Jason Carr. Expect fantastic period costume designed by Michael Howells, amazing lighting by Rick Fisher and clever choreography by Scott Ambler. Even if you’re not a lover of sport it’s thrilling and emotionally charged stuff.

Chariots of Fire.... post olympic bluesThe film version was always going to be a hard act to follow but in my view this stage presentation succeeds in all aspects .... solid acting, good lighting and scene changes and good use of music. the stage is cleverly designed with a revolving track that enables a sense of motion but no feeling of chaos or aimless running. The story is true to the film with a few additional pieces of action information. We were sat rather high up in the circle seats which meant that our view was always looking down on the actors so we lost a sense of closeness to the action. The dialogue was generally clear and the production was slick. I particularly enjoyed the blending of modern athletes and their hi tech kit with the old fashioned clothing and equipment. The ending was impressive and i had shivers and a strong emotional response to the power that sport can arouse such as we felt throughout the summer of 2012. well done to all involved in the show/ My teenage daughters certainly enjoyed it.

Chariots of Fire - shame about the scriptVisually, this show was excellent and really captured the time as well as the legacy. Acting great too. But script over written and at times rather expositional particularly in the first half.

Wonderful experienceA great show, very cleverly adapted for the theatre with a central circular stage with revolving aspects. Some humour and fun included in what was a really poignant story of values and beliefs . Very well done!!

Athletics 2012Try to forget the film Chariots of Fire and marvel at the combination of acting, athleticism, music and moving story of this stage adaptation. The play shows how religious background and conviction can motivate people for honorable purposes. Exceptional talent produced admirable people in Liddell and Abrahams. The struggles they faced were magnificently played. The whole cast should be proud of what they present to the audiences.

A great night outI'm always a little suspicious of films that are turned into stage plays but Chariots of Fire is indeed a triumph - sparkling entertainment, excellent actors, brilliant staging. Can't recommend this show highly enough.

Not quite worked.Good experience and don,t know how else they could have pulled this off,but you need to know the story of Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddle to get the play, otherwise you are left wondering at times whats going on particularly when they are running. Loads of empty seats too,so not much atmos. Shame .

Principles win in the endHaving seen the film years ago with all the camera work giving it atmosphere I wondered how the stage show would compare. I was very pleasantly surprised. Unlike some films with a religious theme in it the characters were not lampooned for their beliefs. The applause at the end showed that others shared my enjoyment.

Theatre, not film!Borrowed a little too much from the film without the dramatic effect. The running scenes, which are the heart of the film, did not translate that well to theatre which had to make do with parody. A good evening's entertainment without setting the world alight.

I took my husband to Chariots of Fire for his birthday. We had seen the film several times - in fact I saw it on the plan only 2 weeks ago. I ccouldn't see how it could be done... and secretly was ready to be let down. It was absolutely fantastic. EverWe thought it probably helped to have seen the film - or at least to have known the story.

Then and now. This is a very imaginative and clever presentation of a moving true story. I especially liked the topical twists included by musicians and the wardrobe dept. Thought provoking challenges are posed for today's audience, as the story focuses on the motivation of two olympic athletes in 1926.... superbly acted.

Great theatrical experience - pity about the only average actingThe play onits own was only average, but as a theatrical experience, it was excellent. Unfortunately it was sometimes difficult to differentiate between the actors as to who was playing what role. I came away with the thought "with a play like this who needs the uncertainties of London 2012".
