Cable Street Tickets

Following a sell-out season, the critically acclaimed British musical Cable Street returns to the capital, on stage at the Southwark Playhouse Elephant theatre. You’ll be on the edge of your seat throughout Tim Gilvin and Alex Kanefksy’s new musical about the historic 1936 clash in London’s East End.

The show tells the amazing true story of the 1936 Battle of Cable Street, weaving stories from the East End of London centring on three young workers; the Polish Jew Sammy, the Irish Catholic Mairead and the Lancastrian Ron.

When Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists started their march on the street as many as three hundred thousand Jews, Irish workers and communists united to blockade it. Moseley’s people were driven away as thousands of ordinary people from different backgrounds united against the hatred, and the lives of the people living on Cable Street were changed forever.

A skilled creative team brings the past to vibrant life

Directed by Adam Lenson, Cable Street is written by composer and lyricist Tim Gilvin and playwright Alex Kanefsky. The book is by Kanefsky and the choreography by Jevan-Howard Jones.

The set designer is Yoav Segal, the costume designer is Lu Herbert, and the associate director is Jamie Buller. The musical supervisor Tamara Saringer joins orchestrator and arranger Tim Gilvin, lighting designer Sam Waddington, dramaturg Olivia Mace, and casting director Sarah Leung to complete the creative team. It’s produced by 10 to 4 Productions and Neil Marcus.

Predicted to be a sell-out, this is so much more than an entertaining musical. It’s a riveting history lesson, a powerful warning from the past, and a beautiful celebration of the human spirit as well as an unforgettable story. You’ll probably find the similarities between those dark days and the troubles we face today disturbing.

The setting is breathtaking, the plot is clear and dynamic, the lighting is atmospheric and there are moments of delightful humour scattered throughout it despite the dark subject. The final battle is genuinely scary, making it no surprise the show has been called ‘theatrical storytelling of the highest order’. A delightful contemporary score completes the picture, crossing over through rap, rock, hymns and more to mark our capital’s multicultural nature.
