The Cabinet Minister in London

Sir Julian Twombley is in BIG trouble. His political reputation is under fire, his wife has run up enormous debts and his son has run up even more. The House of Commons is suddenly fraught with danger. The media has scented blood. Will he hang on to his sanity? It’s a familiar story but guess what? The Cabinet Minister was written in 1889, and produced for the first time at the Court Theatre in spring 1890. It just goes to show that politics never changes!

This fantastic show is a must-see, newly adapted by actor Nancy Carroll who also leads the cast. The result is a sparkling story of marriage, blackmail and class war.

The Cabinet Minister - The Story

A satirical comedy, The Cabinet Minister follows the financial and social dilemmas of a British cabinet minister, Sir Julian Twombley. Follow Julian as she tries to navigate his political duties while dealing with his family's extravagant spending, which leads to a potential financial scandal. The Cabinet Minister humorously displays the clash between public responsibilities and private crises in the life of a politician.

The Cabinet Minister Cast and Creatives

Sir Arthur Wing Pinero’s ‘breathless farce’ stars Nancy Carroll as Lady Katherine Twombley, Nicholas Rowe (Tammy Faye) as the Right Honourable Sir Julian Twombley, and Sara Crowe as the Dowager Countess of Dumdurris.

The play also stars Dillie Keane (Fascinating Aïda) as Lady Macphail, George Blagden (Company and TV’s Versailles) as Valentine White, Joe Edgar (Just For One Day) as Brook Twombley, Phoebe Fildes (Assassins) as Fanny Lacklustre, and Rosalind Forbes (In Clay) as Imogen Twombley. Dom Hodson (Bleak Expectations) plays Keith Lord Drumdurris, Laurence Ubong Williams (The Motive and the Cue) is Mr Bernard Lacklustre and Mr Melting, Romaya Weaver plays Lady Effie Vibart and Matthew Woodyatt (A Song of Songs) is Sir Colin Macphail of Ballocheevin.

The set and costume designer is Janet Bird (Guys and Dolls), and we have the Olivier-nominated sound designer George Dennis (The Homecoming) on board, along with Tony-winning composer and musical supervisor Sarah Travis (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street), and movement coach Joanna Goodwin (My Fair Lady).

About The Cabinet Minsiter

Sir Arthur Wing Pinero absolutely adored everything about the theatre. An English playwright who became a professional actor at aged 19, he played supporting roles in provincial theatres before ultimately became a member of Henry Irving's famous Lyceum Theatre company. He wrote his first play in 1877.

The Magistrate (1885) was his longest runner and, along with this one, it remains a theatre favourite. 1893’s play The Second Mrs Tanqueray shocked audiences and went on to make an impressive profit. He wrote the 1898 romcom Trelawny of the Wells and even ventured into opera with the unsuccessful The Beauty Stone in 1898.
