Brokeback Mountain in London
What is Brokeback Mountain about?
A tale of love, heartbreak and herding, Brokeback Mountain is a new play written by Ashley Robinson, based on Annie Proulx's successful short story.
Set in Wyoming in 1963, the story follows Ennis and Jack who both take on sheep herding jobs on the isolated Brokeback Mountain, in a bid to escape their extreme rural poverty. While they're away from their tight, insular and conservative families and communities back home, the pair flounder in an unexpected emotional water of increasing depth and develop both a heart-warming and heart-breaking connection.
A stage adaptation of the multi-award-winning movie, Brokeback Mountain will combine narrative and Country and Western songs to tell an intense tale of hidden love across two decades, and the tragic consequences that face Ennis and Jack on their journey.
The first world premiere to run at @sohoplace, and the fourth production to open at London's newest venue, Brokeback Mountain is running at @sohoplace between 10 May till 12 August 2023.

Originating the role of Ennis in this world premiere will be Lucas Hedges. An Academy Award nominee making his West End debut, Lucas has previously starred in a myriad of successful movies, including Manchester By The Sea, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Lady Bird.

Recently receiving a BAFTA nomination for his portrayal of Riff in Steven Spielberg's West Side Story, Faist also has a Tony nomination under his belt for originating the role of Connor Murphy in the Broadway production of Dear Evan Hansen.
The cast is completed by:
- Emily Fairn (BBC's The Responder) as Ennis's wife, Alma
- Paul Hickey as Older Ennis
- Martin Marquez as Joe/Bill/Jack's Father
- Eddi Reader as the Balladeer with her band: Sean Green (piano/MD), Meelie Traill (upright bass), Julian Jackson (chromatic harmonica) and BJ Cole (pedal steel guitar)

I absolutely loved the show. I was worried that it would not have the same impact on me as the film, but it did, it brought me to tears. The acting, the clarity of the voices were brilliant. Just loved Eddi Reader`s voice, so beautiful and clear. Thank you to all the cast and the whole production team, lighting, sound, and staging, it was first class.
