Best of Enemies in London

Starring:

David Harewood, Zachary Quinto

Best of Enemies – A fiery political drama

Want to experience something intense, a true story about the world-changing relationship between two powerful Americans? Come see Best of Enemies, presented by Second Half Productions, Eleanor Lloyd Productions, Wessex Grove, Young Vic and Headlong. It’s written by James Graham and originally premiered in December 2021 at the Young Vic Theatre. Now it’s back, transferring to the Wes End’s Noel Coward Theatre in November 2022.

What's the plot of Best of Enemies?

Roll back time to 1968. It was a year of strong protest in the USA, and it divided the nation. The presidential race is on and two men are fighting to become the next President. At the same time another battle is taking place on TV, between the clever conservative William F Buckley Junior, and the determined liberal Gore Vidal. No wonder Best of Enemies theatre tickets are predicted to sell out.

Beliefs are challenged and insults shared as the play progresses, revealing the political giants fighting on TV night after night. Debating America’s moral landscape and arguing hard, each unable to give an inch, neither presenter realised they were about to open a brand new frontier in American political reporting. By their actions in that long-ago time, they transformed the TV news forever.

The play is beautifully written by James Graham, the award-winning playwright and screenwriter who gave us Sherwood, Quiz, and Brexit: the Uncivil War. It’s directed by Jeremy Herrin, who has collaborated with Herrin before.

Nominated for a South Bank Sky Arts Award for Best New Theatre Production, and nominated for an Olivier Award, the show won the Critics Circle Theatre Award for Best New Play and has attracted five star reviews from The Observer, The Times, and the Sun.

Who is Best of Enemies for?

Theatre tickets for Best of Enemies are suitable for anyone who is mature enough to appreciate the ins and outs of fierce political debate and understand the historical importance of social change.

Press Reviews

Written by James Graham and directed by Jeremy Herrin, this well-deserved West End transfer of the 2021 Young Vic multi-award winner, depicts the series of groundbreaking confrontational studio debates which have nowadays become part of the media mainstream, but which at the time were revelatory and a magnet for those seeking an intellectually barbed assessment of the political scene.

London Box Office

With so many fantasy stories on London stages at the moment, it's refreshing to watch a play set in the real world, dealing with issues of race and economy. And Best of Enemies gives its lead actors plenty of dialogue and characterisation to sink their teeth into, resulting in two memorable performances.

A masterpiece in acting and production

Not only are the star actors worth their weight in gold and talent (which goes without saying) but every performer on stage bright theor character to life and will stay on in memory. A special note is due to the production team for an innovative set-up and change of sets. They bring the subtlety and old world charm to the play. Finally, you know the leading actors are powerhouse performers when they can hold your attention with the barest of props. A must watch!

Music too loud! But fitting for the period. Fascinating insight re the fierce competition between TV Channels and the dirty tricks they all dabble in! A real trip down memory lane and a must see for anyone interested in American politics.

Compelling, relevant and powerful !!

This is a riveting, brilliantly written play set in 1968 when William F. Buckley and Gore Vidal participate in a series of debates which cogently articulate and synthesize the political underpinnings of the current chasm between liberal and conservative movements in the US .. The acting was sensational as was the staging . As an American, it was particularly powerful to be thrown back into that turbulent time in US history and to simultaneously shutter in recognition of how prophetic the warnings about the destruction of the soul of our country are given the criminality of D trump ,Jan 6 insurrection and the siloed media that enables our citizens to live in disparate realities. This is a must see play!!

The swinging sixties from a different angle. Must see

Attention- one star for the music prior to the show. Annoying choice of music, far too loud. And : unnecessary.

Review: BEST OF ENEMIES at the Noel Coward Theatre

by Stuart King | Thursday, December 1 2022, 19:54

Zachary Quinto (the most recent incarnation of Mr Spock in the Star Trek film franchise) becomes the latest in a long line of Hollywood imports to hit London’s theatre district. Stylishly delivering his effete East Coast leftie Gore Vidal to David Harewood’s brittle and uptight right-winger William F Buckley Jr, the two spar for the TV cameras in ABC’s news studio as they offer their distinctly polarised political assessment of the Republican and Democratic conventions in the run-up to the 1968 US Presidential Election.
