Bend It Like Beckham in London
Bend It Like Beckham – An homage to the beautiful game
It's much more than a brilliant comedy drama. This fascinatingly funny story also challenges sexism, homophobia and the role of women in society. But it's about as far from earnest as it gets, since the action takes place against a backdrop of the two female leads fighting for the attentions of their male football coach.
What's the difference between the movie and the musical? You can expect a lot of similarities with the original 2002 film, but some characters have been dropped and the plot is much tighter as a result.
Bend It Like Beckham - The story
Jesminder Bhamra, AKA Jess, is 18, the daughter of traditional Punjabi Sikh Indians from Hounslow, Essex. Jess adores football but her parents don't think it's a suitable game for a girl. Sometimes Jess plays football in the park with her closet homosexual friend Tony and his mates. And it's during one of these knockarounds that she's spotted by Jules Paxton, a key player in the local women's team, the Hounslow Harriers.
The team coach, Joe, is also impressed and offers her a place. But Jess has to lie to her parents to play, and things soon get complicated. Jess and Jules become best friends, but they both fancy Joe and this complicates things even further.
When a big match in Germany comes along, Jess gets her sister Pinky to cover for her in her fictional job in an effort to hide her footballing antics. But Jules spies Joe kissing Jess, the friends fall out and it really doesn't help that the families are sure the girls are lesbians.
The Hounslow Harriers eventually win a place at the top of their league and Joe persuades Jess to come clean. But Mr Bhamra simply can't believe she's talented enough to win a prestigious scholarship. Can Jess and Jules sort out their differences? Can Jess make peace with her parents? And will the team win the league championship? Come along and see for yourself.

Indian Joyfulness Wins the MatchI enjoyed the show as much as I have enjoyed German spectators cheering for the main character during the performance even though Britain won over Germany in the show. I loved the promotion of tolerance and family values, but it kind of strikes me as unusual the promoting of the gay agenda that I did not find so strong in the film.

wonderful showHaving watched the film a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it, I was very pleased to see it had been made into a musical, although I wasn't sure how this would work. It does work, the show is brilliant and although the story is serious, it is very funny. The costumes at the wedding are beautiful, and the songs excellent. What fun to see "Victoria Beckham" doing keepie uppies!

Beck-TackularThoroughly impressed with how they were able to bring the film onto the stage, and as a musical too! Excellent acing and very comical (particularly from the role of Pinky- Jess' sister). The script, musical scores and dances were excellent, I'd recommend this show to anyone who wanted to view a light-hearted performance. You may even see Posh and Becks....

Funnier than the filmOverall a thoroughly enjoyable show - the cast was really good and injected comedy which had me laughing out loud and much better than the film. songs were good on the whole and the dancing was an interesting mix of Bollywood bhangra and modern but a bit patchy. Set worked really well and interesting to have the orchestra pit at "first floor" level (this explains restricted view labels on some seats at the back of the stalls - glad we chose the Dress Circle. Overall a really good night out.

Review of BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM at the Phoenix Theatre
by Phil Willmott | Friday, June 26 2015, 14:03
It’s great to see the newspaper critics have enjoyed BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM. The show’s press rep, Janine Shalom of Premiere PR, couldn't spare me a ticket to review the final product and when I saw it, in previews a few weeks ago, there were a lot of problems with the show.
