Being Shakespeare in London

Starring:

Simon Callow

Being Shakespeare – Passionate about The Bard

Written by the respected scholar Jonathan Bate and directed by Tom Cairns, Being Shakespeare reveals how the son of a humble English glove maker became one of the world’s best known playwrights. The production returns to town with two hugely successful runs in the West End already under its belt, delivering a wonderfully multi-dimensional revelation of Shakespeare, the man.

Simon Callow, star of stage and screen, adores Shakespeare. And it shows. His fascination with the playwright is endless, especially since Shakespeare was, by all accounts, a shy and modest chap.

Callow’s one-man show serves up a feast of characters from the Bards finest works, including As You Like It, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Julius Caesar and many more, each revealing more about the man’s inner life.

Callow plays the role with considerable energy and intensity, already hailed as a tour de force. If you’re looking for an introduction to Shakespeare and his work, it’s the perfect way to get to know the personality behind the plays. If you already know his work you’ll love the richly nuanced, funny and intriguing insights it provides. As The Guardian said in 2011, this is "A memorable multidimensional picture of Shakespeare, steeped in scholarship and love”.

The plays featured include Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Comedy of Errors, Doctor Faustus (by Christopher Marlowe), Henry V, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Macbeth, King Lear, Troilus and Cressida, The Tempest and more.

Being Shakespeare - The story

This exceptional production weaves the story of Shakespeare’s life through tantalising fragments of his best-loved works. It’s a clever way to speculate about The Bard’s experiences, and make educated guesses about how they might have inspired his remarkable characters. It’s amazing seeing Callow switch so effortlessly and fluidly between Shakespeare and the vivid personalities he created in his plays. This production will leave you breathless with admiration!

When one man stands before you on a stage in his everyday clothes but manages to convince you he is himself one second and a Shakespearean character the next, no change of costume, no change of scene, you are watching an actor

Being is believing Shakespeare

Simon Callow was outstanding and his performance was a master class in how to tell the relatively unknown story and yet illustrate it with perfect choice of prose and image! The setting was good and the atmosphere spot on. thoroughly recommend this wonderful portrayal to anybody and those who miss Simon's performance will, as they say, be the poorer for it!
