Aspects of Love – Re-imagined for today’s world
Would you like to see the legendary Michael Ball starring in an equally legendary musical? Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s magical Aspects of Love is back, recreated for the 21st century. Expect the same awe inspiring tunes with lyrics by Don Black and Charles Hart. The show is directed by Jonathan Kent and produced by Nica Burns, and it plays at the West End’s Lyric Theatre from 12th May 2023 onwards.
What's the plot of Aspects of Love?
Aspects of Love is inspired by the 1955 novella of the same name by David Garnett. It weaves the tale of a group of friends and family, and their changing romantic entanglements as lovers drift together, break up, change partners, then return to each other.
Set in Paris and Pau in France, and Venice in Italy, the action takes place between 1947 and 1964. You’ll meet Alex Dillingham, a young Englishman who falls head over heels in love the first time he sees the actress Rose Vibert. Rose falls in love with Alex’s Uncle George. George and his mistress, Giulietta, fall in and out of love. George and Rose’s teenage daughter Jenny falls in love for the first time with her older cousin, Alex. This sweeping, ambitious story of the heart’s follies is quite simply spellbinding.
Aspects of Love features a suite of Lloyd Webber classics, including the beloved ‘Love Changes Everything’, and ‘Anything But Lonely’. The book is by Andrew Lloyd Webber, who first came across the story back in 1979. He and Tim Rice were approached to write songs for a movie version of the original novella, but nothing came of it. A potential stage collaboration with Trevor Nunn resulted in a few songs, presented in 1983, but it took five more years for the musical to come together.
The 1989 West End production was directed by Trevor Nunn and choreographed by Gillian Lynne. Musical direction was by Michael Reed and the show opened on 17th April 1989 at the Price of Wales Theatre. Since then it has appeared in 1990 on Broadway. In 1991 the Edmonton chamber version scored a huge hit and in 2007 the UK Tour also delighted fans. In 2010 there was a London revival followed by a 2012–2013 Dutch Tour, a stint in 2018 in Manchester, and a 2019 London Revival. Now it’s back, re-imagined once more, and we predict Aspects of Love theatre tickets will sell out fast.
21 songs in Act 1 and 25 in Act 2 make it an extraordinary musical theatre experience, brought back to sizzling life for 2022. Michael Ball is excited at the prospect, saying: “Aspects of Love holds a very special place in my heart. I am absolutely delighted to revisit Andrew Lloyd Webber's glorious score in a re-imagined chamber production in the West End from May next year. I am so happy to be collaborating again with the brilliant director Jonathan Kent who was so inspiring when we worked together on Sweeney Todd.”

Aspects of Love A great show.Aspects of Love. Is a great show. It was lovely to see Michael Ball back in the show, even though he was playing an older main character. He played his part well and still has a great voice. I recommend seeing the show. It’s a great night out and very entertaining.

Light- hearted night out.I read a synopsis of the plot before watching the show, which was useful for establishing characters and the ins and outs of their relationships. We enjoyed it ( Monday night performance) as we are fans of Alternate George ( the actor playing the part).

Lovely singingI enjoyed the show, though found the story in the second half too unbelievable and incestuously based. Also, while the George stand in for Michael Ball was good, it wasn't made clear when booking that on Mondays Michael Ball doesn't appear.

A great theatre showThe seats in the Dress Circle 2nd row gave an all round excellent view of the show. All members of the cast gave a fine performance and work hard. The transition of scenes was excellent keeping the storyline moving at all times.

Joyful revivalIt was great to see and hear Michael Ball hit that high note on 'LOVE CHANGES EVERYHING'. He dominated the stage and the narrative became about him. He has good support from all the other artists, in particular Laura Pulver, who has a wonderful operatic voice.

Not to be missed.Very good show, however the only minus point was that the actors did not look up to the balcony seats ( except Michael Ball). Which was very professional of him.

Excellent acting & singing, story poorThe acting and singing were great and the effects to change from scene to scene were interesting, I liked the vignette effect. I saw the show the first time round but had forgotten the story. I’m not sure that the incestuous nature of the love affairs portrayed have necessarily stood the test of time which made it difficult to empathise - my 24 year old daughter thought they were all deeply messed up! Still … it gave us plenty to talk about on the journey home!
