Anything Goes in London

Anything Goes – The dazzling Cole Porter classic
Anything goes on board the SS America. This gorgeous musical is perfect for our times, a classic story you can escape into for a couple of delicious hours of old-school musical pleasure. You can thank Cole Porter and P. G Wodehouse for this one, which made 1934 a lot more fun for Americans on Broadway, bringing cheer to a world still ravaged by the first world war and heading for a second. It's lovely, and it's yours for 2022.
This new production of the Cole Porter and P. G Wodehouse classic, fresh from the golden age of musicals is called Anything Goes, and it's quite simply spectacular. No wonder it's a multi-Tony award winner.
What's the plot?
Bon Voyage, courtesy of the magnificent ship the S.S America. Sadly the sailing isn't smooth as the ship heads for the horizon. When a couple of less-than-likely pairs set on a tricky course heading for true love, everyday etiquette flies out of the window... or maybe we should say 'out of the porthole'!
The journey is a rocky one, proving that destiny isn't always enough. Now and again fate needs a firm helping hand. This time around that helping hand is delivered by an entire crew of singing and dancing sailors, one hilarious disguise, some truly farcical blackmail, and oodles of timeless musical fun. The costumes, the set, the music, as you'd expect from a stage musical like this, are all totally spectacular.
Starring multi award-winner Kerry Ellis (Wicked/We Will Rock You) as Reno Sweeney and Olivier Award Winner Denis Lawson (Bleak House/Star Wars) as Moonface Martin. Joining them is Olivier Award Winner Simon Callow (Christmas Carol/Midsomer Murders) as Elisha Whitney and Musical Theatre Royalty Bonnie Langford (EastEnders/9 to 5) as Evangeline Harcourt.
Kathleen Marshall’s Tony-Award winning creative staging of this show made a massive splash on Broadway, and the fun continues. It's a truly stunning production with a joyous musical score to match, including the memorable ‘I Get A Kick Out of You’, 'It's De-Lovely' and ‘You’re the Top’. It's no surprise this is being tipped as the musical of 2022. And no surprise the show has been revived so many times since 1934.
Elaine Paige, Bernard Cribbins, Caroline O'Connor, Sutton Foster and Joel Grey have all played in previous productions. There was a smash hit revival from Sheffield Theatres in 2015, and the story has been adapted for cinema twice, both in 1988 and 2011. The creative team comprises of set designer Derek McLane, lighting designer Neil Austin, sound designer Simon Baker and musical supervisor Stephen Ridley.
It's colourful and vivid. It's fantastic fun, light-hearted, highly entertaining and packed with glamour. If you only see one classic stage musical in 2021, make it this one!
Who is this show for?
This delicious, delightful, de-lovely musical is full of wicked double-entendres. The age recommendation will be announced soon.

Thrilling, Exhilarating, Funny and Uplifting showBrilliant actors, singers and dancers; superb choreography, great story, clever staging, so funny and really uplifting show! How does Kerry Ellis in the role of Reno Sweeney could sing so well immediately after such a big tap dancing scene at the end of 1st act is unbelievable and just amazing! I really loved it! Watched the show 2nd time. The moment it finished I want to watch it again!

Enjoyable night outThe show pretty much goes downhill in the second half after a stupendous finish to the first. It feels as if the songs are just thrown in to fill the time. In addition the songs are not as good. But overall if you like old musicals, as I do, there’s plenty to enjoy.

fast enjoyable musical in the traditional styleLoved the show. hated the venue. Nothing was signposted. There was one ice cream queue on the ground floor, nothing for the circle or upper circle. Two gift shops, but couldn't find an outlet for sweets. Small very limited cafe
