American Idiot in London

Green Day's explosive, award-winning Broadway musical American Idiot, returns to The Arts theatre after a smash-hit run last year.

Winner of two Tony Awards® and the 2010 Grammy Award winner for Best Musical Show Album, American Idiot is the story of three boyhood friends, each searching for meaning in a post 9/11 world. The show features the music of Green Day with the lyrics of its lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong and book by Billie Joe Armstrong and Michael Mayer.

US rock band Green Day released their American Idiot album back in 2004. Inspired by epic rock operas such as Jesus Christ Superstar and The Who’s Tommy, the album soon went multi-platinum, selling over 15m copies to date and winning a Grammy for Best Rock Album.  Now in 2015 they’ve been inducted in to the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame confirming their reputation as one of the biggest rock music acts of the last 20 years. Its hit songs include Boulevard of Broken Dreams, 21 Guns, Wake Me Up When September Ends, Holiday and the blockbuster title track American Idiot. Also included are several songs from Green Day’s 2009 release 21st Century Breakdown, and an unreleased love song, When It’s Time.

This thrilling new musical has had Green Day fans in rapture and introduced a generation of theatregoers to their powerful and moving musical style. So come and discover what all the noise is about!

Talent galore, great music and a strong and powerful story

The show was better than I imagined. The front row seats were very close and I'd probably prefer to be a little further back. The story is powerful and at times incredibly sad. I am so pleased to have seen this production at long last and even more so in such a special and intimate setting. I would return to the Arts Theatre.

An antidepressant for any basket case.

Massive nostalgia trip if you grew up in the 1990's... Had pink hair, wore VANs and owned a skateboard.... Occasionally crashing&burning along the way....and of course was a GreenDay fan. I sat in the Front Stalls to the right. Outstanding effort by all actors and musicians. It was clearly visible ito see how much energy was being placed into character and physical ability that the show demands. I can't really say I disliked anything about the show. It's a spit and sawdust theatre but then that's the nature of the show....

Really great show, already deciding on when to see it again. The cast was really really good und the writing and how they used the songs was perfect. Definitely recommended! Leave the kids at home though, there are some serious themes in this.

Energetic, brilliant music, great vocals

We went on recommendation of a friend. The music was fantastic, slightly punkish so brought back the excitement of our misspent youth! The theatre is quite small but with a great atmosphere - we felt like we were actually at a gig rather than in the audience. A very entertaining show :0)

Raw, in your face - excellent show

I love Green Day and the show was great in the way it brought out the nitty gritty reality of their music. The story was mainly shown by the music and acting. There was very little scripted speech and this meant it was as if they had put together an impressionist piece of art in the form of music and acting. Newton Faulkner who is not know for his acting was excellent - a star performance.

Not an easy storyline

Neither myself nor friends really knew what was going on! Hint. Read synopsis before you go. Bit disappointed nor to have heard some of Green Days best material but couldn't fault the music or the singing.

Amazing show

Every actor in the show is great but Aaron, the lead singer/role is awesome. His voice is fantastic and his acting extremely good. Amelia lily is also very good. The storyline is a little confusing but it doesn't really matter as each song is performed so well.

Excellent performance

I have seen a version of this done on a larger stage with loads more tech but this one blew me away! The music I already knew was excellent but the performances were far more endearing and moving, I felt empathy and sympathy and really emotional. The lead was especially good and I highly recommend this to anyone, Green Day fans or not.

Terrific

Having seen the limited run international version, on a much bigger stage, The Arts Theatre brought a dimension of intimacy to the performance. The set is very good, making use of the Vertcal, and the music & singing are of a very high standard. This is a gritty storyline and not suitable for under 15's. If you are a Green Day fan then this is a must see.

Energetic show with great music

American Idiot was an energetic show with great music but little storyline and no ending. There was copius acting of intravenous drug use and the language was unrestrained. Teenagers and big fans of Green Day will no doubt really enjoy it, but if you are borderline it's a vaguely diverting way to spend 2 hours.

A show for the lost generations

Loved the show, but then we're fans of Green Day's music. Well produced, reasonably well structured, the Company made the best of a small stage. If you're not a GD fan, or into that genre of music, you may struggle to get the best from this show

Review: AMERICAN IDIOT at Arts Theatre

by David Scotland | Wednesday, July 20 2016, 15:50

American Idiot - Arts Theatre This month sees the UK production of Green Day’s American Idiot return to the Arts Theatre. Directed and choreographed by Racky Plews, it stars The X Factor alumni Amelia Lily and music artist Newton Faulkner.

American Idiot has a big advantage over it’s ‘jukebox musical’ cousins. It does not have the usual cobbled together plot that has no other purpose than to facilitate a tour through a band’s greatest hits. Instead the show takes its title and score from a hit album, which itself was written as a rock opera in the vein of The Who’s Tommy and perhaps less obviously Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar.

American Idiot at the Arts Theatre

by Phil Willmott | Friday, July 24 2015, 15:47

American Idiot I first saw Green Day’s AMERICAN IDIOT on Broadway and really enjoyed the spectacle of the vast production melding projections with jaw-dropping mid air acrobatics. I wouldn’t have imagined it working in a more intimate setting but director/choreographer Racky Plews has done an incredible job in reducing the spectacle at the Arts Theatre whilst retaining all the intensity of the original. If anything it actually works better now it’s more human in scale.
