David Mamet's explosive crime drama examines the idea of honour among thieves as a group of dodgy crooks plan a heist. But a comedy of errors soon spins everything out of control.

This is a razor sharp, deeply funny and dark play about divided loyalties and insatiable greed. It won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for best play in 1977 season, was nominated for two Tonys, Best Direction of a Play and Best Scenic Design, and enjoyed a total of four Drama Desk Award nominations, including one for Outstanding New American Play.

American Buffalo - The story

Don owns a junk shop. When he sells a rare buffalo nickel to a guy for just ninety dollars, he regrets it almost immediately. Surely it's worth more? Together with his young gofer Bob, who is as dodgy as they come, he decides to steal it back.

When Bob notices the customer has left home for the weekend, suitcases in hand, he's keen to get going. But Teach, who plays poker with Don, is even keener to take on the task himself, believing he's much more experienced and trustworthy than Bob. But there's more. Teach has big plans: why just nick a buffalo when you can nick an entire coin collection?

As Teach and Don make preparations for the burglary, Fletcher, another poker buddy who gets involved along the way, is running late. Teach takes the opportunity to paint Fletcher as a thief and a liar. Don is keen to stop Teach from taking his gun along. Bob attempts to sell Don a buffalo nickel similar to the one Don had sold to the customer. And things start to get very confused and nasty indeed, with counter-accusations flying.

Fletcher gets mugged by some Mexicans and is hospitalised - or is he? Bob gets hit on the head with a metal object. Some friends corroborate the stories, others bring them into doubt, and the tales flying around get ever-wilder...

One thing: the rich, often extremely bad language in this play means it's best for over 18s.
