Alterations in London

In the first revival of Alterations in 40 years, this lively version of Michael Abbensetts' classic play reveals the London experienced by Guyanese people in the 1970s, celebrating the Windrush generation’s aspirations and sacrifices. Brilliant.

Alterations - The Story

Arinzé Kene (Get Up, Stand Up: The Bob Marley Story) plays Walker and Cherrelle Skeete (Hanna) is Darlene in this gorgeous comedy set in a tailor’s shop. The plot was inspired by the playwright’s experiences in a tiny room off Carnaby Street ,where two enterprising black men had set up shop with just an ironing board and a sewing machine each. A member of the Black Plays Archive collection by Black British, African, and Caribbean playwrights, this is excellent-quality drama. Expect a fresh, powerful take on an era-defining 1978 comedy classic.

Walker Holt has big dreams for his shop, a huge order to make, and there aren’t enough hours in the day. As the time passes he works tirelessly to satisfy his new client’s impossible requirements. But the trouser hems are not the only things beginning to fray. As tensions rise, Walker’s friendships and relationships are pushed to their limits. Success, as it turns out, comes at a cost - but is the cost too high?
