A story that began back in the mists of time

Aladdin is the Lyric Hammersmith’s 2024 panto but the story originates way back in the mists of time. It’s one of the stories from The Thousand and One Nights, a collection created over centuries by different people across Asia and North Africa. Some of the stories have roots in medieval tales from Persia and Mesopotamia, and most of them started life as folk tales. The first English language version was printed between 1706 and 1721. The 1992 animated Disney movie inspired millions. And these days it’s a familiar fixture in the colourful world of pantomime.

Fabulous writing, brilliant direction

Following their critically acclaimed panto Jack and the Beanstalk in 2022,the award-winning writer Sonia Jalaly and director Nicholai La Barrie have joined forces to bring the magic of Aladdin back to London. The venue is perfect for pantomime, famed for its popular festive family productions.

Sonia Jalaly is a writer and theatre maker from Manchester whose work has appeared at Kiln Theatre, Donmar Warehouse, Company Three, Paines Plough, Hull Truck and more. As a member of the BBC Writersroom Comedy Room she creates fun for CBBC and CBeebies.

Theatre director, film director and MOBO Fellow Nicholai La Barrie has worked on Tina -The Tina Turner Musical, Statements After An Arrest Under The Immorality Act, Liar Heretic Thief at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre, and White at the Edinburgh Festival, just a few of his successes. His dramaturge credits include Heart of Hammersmith, Feels, and The Mob Reformers, also at the Lyric Hammersmith.
