A View from The Bridge in London
Starring:
Callum Scott Howells, Kate Fleetwood, Dominic West
A View From The Bridge – A new revival
A new revival of A View from the Bridge, a play widely acknowledged as one of the greatest works of 20th century US theatre, stars the excellent Dominic West and Callum Scott Howells in a well-deserved London transfer. Having sold out in Bath for a month, Arthur Miller's 1955 play is set to once more reveal the destructive nature of obsessive love. It’s on at the Theatre Royal Haymarket from May 23rd and runs for 10 weeks.
A View From The Bridge tickets – Classic US theatre
Tickets for the production at the Ustinov Studio sold out in under an hour, yet another version of the classic from the beloved Pulitzer Prize-winning American playwright's drama. It has been adapted for stage and screen too many times to count over the last 70 years and this, Posner's production, is due to be a particularly thrilling revival.
See Dominic West in A View From The Bridge
Dominic West is best known for his movie and TV work, including the now-classic series The Wire and the royal family drama, The Crown. He played Simon Gray's Butley at the Duchess Theatre in 2011, where “West certainly brings out that aspect of the part. He burns up the stage with his energy and allows a malicious gleam to come into his eye". He also starred in Les Liaisons Dangereuses at the Donmar.
West is joined by Callum Scott Howells, the Welsh actor, singer, and talent show winner who has been acting since childhood. Known for his role as Colin Morris-Jones in the Channel 4 drama It's a Sin, from 2021, he was due to play a part in Gary Owen's play Romeo and Julie for the Royal National Theatre in 2020 until covid hit. May 2023 saw him cast as the Frankie Goes to Hollywood singer Holly Johnson in a biographical film Relax, as well as Michael Sheen's BBC series The Way.
All about A View From The Bridge
A View From The Bridge originally premiered on Broadway in 1955, set in Fifties’ New York. The story? This is what happens when the Italian-American dockworker Eddie welcomes two cousins from Sicily, Marco and Rodolpho, into his home. When Rodolpho and Eddie’s niece Catherine start to fall in love a tragic chain of events is set in motion as Eddie struggles with his own feelings for the girl.
The full A View From The Bridge cast and creative team
As well as the BAFTA Award winner West, who plays Eddie, the Olivier and Tony Award nominee Kate Fleetwood of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows fame plays Eddie’s wife Beatrice. The Welsh BAFTA Cymru Award winner Callum Scott Howells plays Rodolpho and the play also stars Nia Towle from Rocketman and Persuasion, plus Martin Marquez who delighted us in Les Misérables and The Crown.
The new production is directed by Olivier award-winning director Lindsay Posner, whose career so far has been pretty impressive, including The Old Vic's The Winslow Boy (2013), The Almeida's House of Games, and The Savoy's Fiddler on the Roof (2007). Peter McKintosh of The Handmaiden's Tale, Cloud Nine, and Boston Marriage fame is the designer, Paul Pyant of The Winter's Tale and Arcadia is the lighting designer, Gregory Clarke of The Third Man and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is the sound designer and Ed Lewis from A Day In The Death Of Joe Egg and The Best Man is the composer.

Great performance for a somehow outdated playAmerican realism, Miller an example, is a bit outdated, with its intense dramatic moments that, nowadays, serve more the purpose of showing the actors' excellency than that of moving an audience. For some reason, great American playwrights are less able to transcend time, and are shallower in terms of meaning, than great European playwrights. The play is attention-catching but its ending somehow dissatisfying. That said, the actors are so magnificent, and the mise-en-scene so well resolved, that the experience is worth it.
