The cast and creative team of A Night With Janis Joplin
The brilliant Tony-nominated Mary Bridget Davies shares the starring role with the equally talented award winning West End star Sharon Sexton (Bat Out of Hell, Billy Elliott). Davies is a musician in her own right. Her band The Mary Bridget Davies Group released an album with original songs in 2012 titled Wanna Feel Somethin. Sexton is a seasoned musical theatre performer, commercial singer and cabaret artist. Both women are a great match for the role.
Written and directed by Randy Johnson, expect a musical journey celebrating not just the woman herself but her many influences. The choreography is by Patricia Wilcox and casting by Anne Vosser. The show is produced by Michael Cohl, Tony Smith and the estate of Janis Joplin and Jeffrey Jampol for Jam Inc, along with UK General Management by MPSI Ltd.
A musical with a glittering history
This is the UK premiere of a multi award-winning musical paying homage to a woman who became a legend in her own lifetime - and remains a legend to this day. Mary Bridget Davies has already cut her teeth on the role of Janis Joplin on the touring and Broadway productions, winning a Tony nomination for Best Lead Actress in a Musical. Sharon Sexton takes over for the matinees.
The musical originally launched in 2011, touring successfully for two full years and breaking box office records. 2013 saw it opening on Broadway, generating rave reviews, then it carried on touring in the US and has never been off the stage since. It even scored a big hit in Japan during 2022, proving Joplin’s wide international appeal.
Meet Janis Joplin
Janis Lyn Joplin was an American singer and songwriter who ended up as an iconic, hugely successful rock performer thanks to her powerful mezzo-soprano voice and electric stage presence. Back in 1967 she and her band, Big Brother and the Holding Company, played at the Monterey Pop Festival in California, which changed her life.
In early October 1970, aged just 27, she was found dead in her Landmark Motor Hotel room, leaving her fans and the music world bereft. The event was made worse by the death of Canned Heat singer Alan Wilson the previous month and Jimi Hendrix 16 days earlier, both also aged 27, in a horrific trio of music business tragedies.
Janis Joplin’s sister, Laura Joplin, said it all in a statement, calling the musical a “full belted memory that drives joy into my heart and tears from my eyes”. The New York Times said it “rocks the house with a fervour that is riveting”. As a music fan you won’t want to miss this epic production which heads to London for a limited season from August 2024.

FabulousLoved the music, loved the cast, loved everything about it - but there is a little swearing and it is loud so maybe not for children or anyone of a sensitive disposition.
